Absence Seizures and Potty Training

Fri, 01/08/2010 - 12:35
My 5 yr old was diagnosed with Absence Seizures a year ago this past Christmas.  I have noticed recenlty that when he has an episode, its like he loses control of his bladder and ends up having an accident.  We have had problems potty training him anyways, but I am starting to wonder if the seizures aren't part of the problem.  Can someone please advise me if this is happening to someone else or if maybe there is something more going on in that little head of his.

My 8 year old son has absence seizures and was diagnosed at 6. He was fully potty trained and dry at night until he started having seizures. He now has to wear pull-ups at night and has accidents every day. Every doctor and neurologist I've talked to can't confirm that it is linked to the seizures, but I don't now how it can't be. My son doesn't even seem to be aware that he is having an accident most of the time. I have no idea what to do to help him. Hopefully someone out there has some ideas on what to do. It is really hard to have an 8 year old that has the bladder and bowel control of a 3 year old!

My son's school called my on Friday and told me he has a seizure and an accident all at the same time.  It is scary to think it is all related.  But he knows that he has to poopoo in the potty and he even knows he is supposed to throw up in the potty but its like his bladder loses all control with every episode, which are getting more and more frequent even with the medication.  I am going to make him an appointment with an urologist and talk to the neurologist to see what can be done.  I feel sorry for him to be the only one in his class still having accidents and that he really can't control it.

From reading other posts I've found on the internet, it's not an uncommon thing to happen.  If your son happens to be on Depakote, I know that there have been some incontinence reported with the use of this drug but I don't know if this would be relevant to the fact that he's losing bladder control during a seizure.
