19 month old with seizure history

Sun, 06/11/2006 - 20:15
My 19 month old daughter has had 4 seizures in the last year - all afebrile - all tonic clonic. All test have come back normal and we are not able to pinpoint a cause or trigger. The last seizure was on Saturday (ironically 1 year to the day of her first seizure). The doctors started her on a low dose of Trileptal. It seems everything I've read online talks about children 4 years and older on this medication. Does anyone else out there have a young child on Trileptal? Is there any information you can offer? Thank you. Anya's Mom

Anya' Mom I dont have a child on it but I was on it for several years and still. The worse side effect that I had was low sodium. Trileptal can cause low sodium for some people and can cause seizures if it gets too low. What I did for this problem was to keep gatorade in the house. When many auras were happening I knew I was too low. I would drink it for a day or so. It only happened when I was on a high dose of it. When it was lowered down, I had no problem. Also talk with your doctor about b vitamins for your daughter it may help with seizures too. take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Hi My son is 9 months old and has epilepsy. He was diagnosed at 6months. He took trileptal for almost three months which was prescribed by a very well respected pediatric neuro. I think there may only be two anticonvulsants that come in liquid formulation- Keppra being the other. Trileptal caused my son to become hyponatremic which can cause more seizures. The doc will probably monitor her blood for this side effect. He now takes Keppra. The only side effect I noticed in him on the trileptal was sleepiness. hope that helps.
