13 year old son diagnosed before 6th grade

I have a 13 year old boy in 7th grade.  Right before he began 6th grade he was diagnosed with Absence seizures.  He was always an honor student in Elementary school making A's with an occasional B.  He was in the AIG program. We started out on Keppra which did nothing for his seizures.  We graduated to Depakote while he was in 6th grade.  My son is a very naive child.  He is not a typical 13 year old.  I guess that is because he is not overly social so he has not been exposed to things most kids have.  Anyway he seemed to be doing well with the Depakote.  His grades fell but only to low B's so no one was real worried.  I thought it was just because it was Middle School.  This year in 7th grade his teachers complained of an attention problem.  We took him in and discovered he was still having seizures so he had Zonegran added to his daily regimen.  After a month the seizures were gone.  However he now cannot concentrate on anything.  Math has always been his strongest subject.  He could do the problems in his head and his teacher said he was her little math genius.  Now he is failing.  He seems to not be able to focus or pay attention to anything.  We decided to try Focalin XR to possibly help with this because the Neurologist does not want to change meds since the combination seems to be working.  Focalin XR was a disaster.  He developed ticks and was acting really strange on it.  He was on it for 3 days and they took him off and said no more stimulants.  The Drs. have decided that no more meds until after school is out.  We have just last week been given a 504 plan which sounded great except only one teacher seems to be following it.  I am at a loss of what to do.  I don't want him to become upset that he can't do the work and I don't know how to help him.  Anyone have ideas of how I can help this summer.  I work full time but I want to get some fun work for him to do so he doesn't get behind.  Will it ever get any better?  Right now I'm feeling so helpless.  He is in Boy Scouts and a church Youth group.  The problem is people especially kids just don't understand what is going on.  Please help!

I wish I could give u ideas, all I can say is try meeting with the school more, what u just wrote about your son was like if u were writing about mine, except he just got diagnoised on April 08, 2010. He is in the 3rd grade and his grades have dropped in the last three weeks, he is on Trileptal and I have also asked for explanation why he seems less able to concentrate in class.  My son is also in Boy Scouts and Youth Group, and so far we have been very lucky that the kids are treating him good. However, the kids he goes to school with have started teasing him, and he doesnt want to go to school anymore.

In reference to the school, keep calling for meetings, educate the teachers about seizures, teachers do not seem to have much information regarding seizures.  Ask your doctors to write a letter to the school explaining a little bit about ur son's condition.  I just got back from the 10th meeting with the school today, gave them some information about the different types of seizures my son has, what some of his symptoms are so they can understand his behaviors and in order to help him I requested an Instructunal Aide to help him after he has a seizure, so he can gain the skills needed to finish his assignments.  Good luck with your son, and by keeping more people informed hopefully one of these days, there will be a better understanding on why seizures occur, and what we can all do to help our children that deal with them.
