Work Pace

Tue, 09/19/2006 - 19:26
Hi to everyone. Do any of you have trouble performing various tasks at a fast pace? I have always been slower at performing tasks and find it difficult when I try to do them at a fast pace. I was recently diagnosed with complex partial seizures. However, I was like this long before experiencing seizures. It is not that I cannot perform the tasks, it just the pace at which I am able to do them. I tend to get very confused when I do try to do them quickly. I thought I had read that the brains of people with epilepsy could not process incoming information as quickly as others. Have any of you read similar information? I wanted to know if this was a symptom of epilepsy or if this was common in healthy people, too. Thanks for your input. tlh64

"People with epilepsy

"People with epilepsy usually are NOT intellectually challenged. Many people MISTAKENLY believe that people with epilepsy are also intellectually or developmentally challenged. In the large majority of situations, this is not true. Like any other group of people, people with epilepsy have different intellectual abilities. Some are brilliant and some score below average on intelligence tests, but most are somewhere in the middle. They have normal intelligence and lead productive lives. Some people, however, may have epilepsy associated with brain injuries that may cause other neurological difficulties that affects their thinking, remembering, or other cognitive abilities. The cognitive problems may be the only problem in most people. Less frequently, some people have other developmental problems that can affect the way they function and live." http://www.epilepsy.com/101/ep101_facts.html

Nevertheless, "People with epilepsy commonly report having problems with their memory. Some describe having trouble remembering names that they once knew. Others forget appointments or are unable to remember to take their medications. Many others feel that they can recall things from the distant past, but cannot recollect events that happened in the past week. In fact, memory difficulties can have such a tremendous impact on people living with epilepsy that it may significantly hinder their functioning at work, in school, and at home." On my seizure days, my focus is almost non-existant. I don't think it is at all a matter of being mentally challenged, but I do think the effects of repeated seizures challenge our brains and our ability to mentally keep up.

Hi fzmousie, My memory sounds like yours. It goes up and down. On the days when I am having seizures, or just before I start having them, my focus is nearly gone but then on the weeks when I am OK I can function nearly fine. They say my memory is deteriorating now because my seizures have increased so much this year (I am now in my mid forties and am wondering if it is because I am perimenopausal). I seem to be having most of my partial/complex partial seizures the week before I start). I am learning all of this from the pre-surgical testing they are putting me through now. I am to the point now that I write down almost everything on post-it notes because I am afraid I will forget things at home and work and I have been keeping my drugs in a daily container so I remember if I have taken them (some days I will get up, take my medicine, pour my coffee, walk to the couch and sit down and not remember if I took it or not !!). Talk to you later, Dawn ;-)
