When should an ambulance be called??

Sun, 01/15/2006 - 18:31
Hi everyone, I work for a branch of a large company. Because of liablity they feel that they should call an ambulance everytime I have a seizure, even if I have a very minor injury ie bruises etc. Should I tell them that I'm fine and not to bother? Or are they legally required to? My seizures generally have a period of unconciousness of 3 minutes, but they seem to call as soon as I hit the ground! Confused, Lena

Hi Lena, Calling an ambulance may be company policy for any "injury" occurring at work, it is like that where my hubby works. I don't think that they're legally required to, they are probably just protecting themselves in case of a legal case with you (workers comp, or a lawsuit- a lot of companies just settle, rather than going through some big court battle). If that is the case, you can't do anything to change them calling an ambulance when your seizures do strike. One question, do they pick up the tab when you do go to the ER? You may want to talk with your supervisor about it, and see what they say. You can try explaining your case: you don't feel it's necessary to call an ambulance each time. Maybe you can print out a seizure safety outline, so they DO know what to do. I hope that helps, good luck! Heather :)

Hi Lena, You might ask your neuro for a written seizure plan to be given to your employer that details what steps to take when you have a seizure and when to call the ambulance. I am sure the company is concerned for both you and for their liability, and maybe a document from your neuro would help. Hi Lena, sorry you're having to worry with your peers phoning ambulances. I had a hard time convincing my wife to just give me a chance to come out of a sz. We agreed if I was out more than five minutes, she ought to go ahead and call. I can understand why your fellow workers would be anxious to call for an EMT. Two suggestions, if you don't mind. Do what you can to inform and educate them about sz and E. If they're at all like my wife, a sz can thoroughly freak someone out. What might be a better route is to find out if your neuro has some better ideas about keeping you from sz in the first place. Best of wishes to you- I hope it comes out OK.- cc
