what to do when someone is having a seizure?
Thu, 07/27/2006 - 05:08Hi I am also new to this site but I see no answer to my question. My father has been taking his meds since feburary. Last night he forgot to take his meds, after he came home he had forgotten again. today his friends drove him back from the coffee shop. He took his pills this morning to make up for last night. When he came back from coffee he immediatelty took the pill. An hour later he had another episode. Since it all started he has had them every 1:45 min. He also has thrown up his meds and any food during any onset of this. His convultions are lasting about 3 min(thats how long it was at the coffee shop). I have been calling his name loudly and gently shaking his hands and rubbing his back until he comes to reality. I need to know if I should just let him go through the convultions, or do I need to keep waking him out of his unconsiousness like I have been doing..? Any Ideas? I am seriously loosing sleep from this. Thanks for any Information.

If a friend with epilepsy falls down and begins to shake during a seizure, you can help:
Stay calm
Move things out of the way
Put something soft under their head
Loosen anything tight around their neck
Turn them gently to one side
Don't put anything in their mouth
Don't try to hold them down
If a friend has a seizure that looks like blank staring, loss of awareness, blinking, chewing, or other movements, you can help by:
Staying calm and reassuring
Guiding them away from danger or standing in front of anything hazardous
Not trying to grab hold of them
Staying nearby until they are fully aware again
Should you call an ambulance when someone has a seizure? You may need to if there are injuries, if the seizure lasts longer than five minutes, or if another seizure begins soon after the first. Usually, a seizure ends naturally by itself.

If this is going on for an extended period of time, I think you need to get him into a hospital. The repetitive effect of seizures like you are decribing can be pretty detrimental. My neuro put it this way: When you have a seizure, it teaches the brain how to have another seizure. I'd pack him into the car and take him to emergency
