What is the deal with thoes jerky things?

Wed, 07/11/2007 - 20:30
Does anyone know what the deal is with those jerky things that you get right as your about to drift off to sleep? I'll just be semi-dreaming is blissful slumber-land when all of a sudden, BAM! Full body jerk! ACK! I wondered if this had anything to do with Epilepsy, because I never had jerks as I've gone off to bed before, and it happens on either both sides at the same time or left side, which is the side that gives me trouble. And sometimes I'll be in even deeper sleep and then I'll wake up due to rythmic and symetic multi-jerks in my legs. I'm sure it's not a T/C seizure, because then I'm sure that I wouldn't wake up and notice it. Also, I know that normal people get jerks as they go to sleep too, but I've never had them before I started getting a bunch of neurological symptoms. I keep on forgetting to ask the doctor about it because it's the least of my worries, and it doesn't really bother me, I'm just curious about it.

Hi, I get those too when I am falling asleep. I've read that they are common and not related to seizures. As far as the multi-jerks in your legs you might want to do some reading on restless leg syndrome. Hope this helps! -Annalise

It's a myoclonic jerk at the onset of sleep paralysis. It happens to everyone.
