Weight and seizures

Mon, 05/08/2006 - 21:55
Can anyone tell me that if losing weight can help a person from having a lot of seizures? ...or is that just wishful thinking on my part???? :-) I'm slightly overweight and thought to do more exercises and start eating healthy again. When I'm stressed a lot I usually go for the food which is pretty bad to do so I'm going to try to kick the habit.....wish me luck!

seizuregirl, Losing weight can only help any health issures I believe if your on the heavier side. If you do lose weight you will feel better about yourself and you won't feel so depressed and then you won't eat more again and you won't gain it back. I have lost 70 lbs and before I was down all the time because of the way I looked and that is a stressful way to live and Stress is a big part of what sets on seizure. So yes in the long run I believe that if you lose some of the extra pounds that the seizure activity could lessen. I would get you doctors opinion. He would be able to tell you for sure. No matter weather it helps with the seizures or not I would encourage you to lose the weight for other health issues. I couldn't live with myself when I was up to 206. I am down to 136 and have 11 more pounds to my 125 pound goal. Good luck with your weight lose. Cathy

Luna Hi Cathy_C How did you lose it? I was on neurontin and gained 80lbs.; then switched to tompomax and lost it. I was able to maintain the weight loss until I had two seizures, (still on topomax) and have not been able to lose it again. I'm on keppra now, and it seems nothing I will make the weight come off. Please offer suggestions. Don't want to go back on topomax thanks

Keppra and Vimpat

I have been on more epiliepsy medication since I was 5 and my weight is like a yoyo because for the growing up years they used me as a guinea pig, from Gabitril,to Tegratol, Lamictal, Phenabarbatol,Depakote, Dilantin, currently it is Vimpat and Keppra XR and no matter how much I walk or exercise, the weight just stays there, I can cut the sugar, cut the pop, and still nothing changes because I believe the drugs screw with your metabolism. Then they say not to overexert yourself so meds don't burn to quickly, but regular exercise just gets the metabolism jump started, walking and the things they say to do I do to get around and they don't help a damn I would use a Total Gym when younger, but they said that exercise stimulation caused seizures, so I am in a catch22 because they say I need to loose weight, but the exercise they recommend doesn't cut it.
