Traveling overseas with different time zones

Fri, 08/19/2016 - 01:42
Hey everyone, I've been wanting to travel to Europe for some time now, I live in California. My seizures are sometimes triggered by lack of sleep or changing my sleep schedules drastically. Have any of you had any issues while traveling overseas and having to change sleep schedules?

My trips are shorter and when

My trips are shorter and when I do travel I keep taking my meds at the times I take them at home. Which means when I visit Mom (California) my meds are taken at central time 2 hours earlier. I have no problems gradually moving them since I can do that by moving them half an hour. Depending on the length of time you will be gong. Understand too that you will have the therapeutic levels which can help a break thru seizure from happening. You might also call your neurologist and tell him how long you will be gone and see what he says. They do know ways to get the meds changed to the other time tables.

Sleep is very important for

Sleep is very important for me too, so I make sure I get enough, or more.  I also take a little something extra for anxiety.    My best help is well-timed sleeping pills, especially if I know I'm going to be in the same seat for more than 6 hours.  I normally change 6-8 As just_joe says, I try not to shift the time I take my meds too much, or too fast. I only take pills in the morning, and at night, so roughly every 12 hours. Even though the time you take your meds will shift, try to make the shift as subtle as possible to keep blood levels the same. That helps you when you return home too. Once I get to the other side, I try to adjust to their timezone quickly, but still make sure I get enough sleep (not sure if you can nap).  Sometimes I spend an hour saying hello, and then go get some sleep. That is where the sleeping pills help me adjust.More advice, give yourself a day to adjust when changing, not rushing into things too fast.  That applies to most people anyway.Don't let it hold you back - enjoy!
