Tegretol Vs Lamictal

Sun, 02/18/2007 - 14:19
I have had epilepsy since 15. I am 40 now and my tegretol dosage has been increased over the years to 600mgx2. I had a seizure last week. I suspect my body is developing an immunity to Tegretol. My doctor suggested changing to Lamictal. Does anybody have any experience with a similar switch or experience with Lamictal.

I have had focal temporal

I have had focal temporal lobe epilepsy since 16. Im now 30. I have been on increasing doses of carbatrol now 400 2xday. Im still having roughly 1 seizure every 2 months and my doctor started me on the starter pack of lamictal. She was explaining how the carbatrol makes the lamictal metabolize quicker. Does anyone know about taking both and how they control for this while you switch?. I hope lamictal is more effective than carbatrol has been. Its been great for over 10 years and now I have had 8 seizures in the last year. Definitely a weird year.

Hi, Thats interesting, I've had epilepsy since I was 16 & I'm now 37, & for most of that time I've been on tegretol (tho I'm now on tegretol retard), same dose as you now 600mg x2. Unfortunately I've had quite a lot more szr's over the last year than usual, & I've been recently wondering if maybe I've also become immune to it? I don't know. my neurologist put me on a small dose of Lamictal years ago, but not for long, because I was feeling nauseus & having bad headache's all the time. however, it might be worth trying, people are different, & I know its v successful with other people. My neuro wants to try me on topomax next?? the best of luck yeah. :-) Ruth x

I'm 36 and have had epilepsy since I was 27. I have Complex Partial Seizures and I am on Carbatrol 700mg x2 and Topamax 100 mg x2. Ever since my Dr. added the Topamax about 4yrs ago I have been completely stable with no seizures. Before that on the Carbatrol alone I would have Complex Partials every so often and then more and more and my Dr. kept increasing my Carbatrol and I was becoming way overmedicated. So they decreased the Carbatrol and added Topamax. As you may have heard, one of the major side effects of Topamax is weight loss, well that was true for me. At least I could afford to lose weight, but it was kinda freaky to lose a bunch really fast. Now my weight is stable but I have a feeling if it wasn't for the Topamax I would weigh a lot more because I am able to eat a lot and not gain any weight. One side effect that I really hate is that I get stuck on words a lot. I'll totally forget what I was going to say next. It drives me crazy. People around me say that it's just part of getting older. Maybe that's part of it too, but it's mostly the meds:) Anyway, for me I think the benefits of Topamax and Carbatrol combined far outweigh the risks of having a seizure.
