Teeth grinding?

Tue, 10/31/2006 - 19:44
During my check-up at the dentist yesterday, she commented again that while my teeth were OK that I was obviously grinding them whilst sleeping and did I know that there was a connection between TLE and teeth grinding. She had read about the connection just recently and that made me think that I had read a post about it on this site, or had I just imagined it? Anyway has anyone had the same problem, I remember when my seizures were at their most frequent my jaw would often be aching when I woke up. My dentist did suggest that whilst I could have a guard to prevent this happening they are often self-defeating and can lead to the grinding becoming even more intense because your teeth are working even harder against a foreign object in your mouth.

Hi Andy! I'm Ashely with Sentinel Mouthguards:) Being in the field for over 15 years I have seen night guards help a tremendous amount of people. Though they may not be for everyone, it is worth a try. I recently added a product to my website that has been beneficial for tongue biting and it works to prevent the damages associated with teeth grinding: https://sentinelmouthguards.com/shop-sentinel-mouthguards/sentinel-teeth-guards-for-tonguecheek-biting/soft-teeth-guards-for-tongue-biting-upper-lower-guards-for-nocturnal-tongue-biting/Also, we wrote this article several years ago and it still stands today: https://sentinelmouthguards.com/5-reasons-not-pay-dentist-make-custom-night-guard/Hope this helps and best of luck to you!

Andy, Truth be told, I haven't been to a dentist for years. Ek! Shhhhh!! But when a sezuire is coming on I think I grind my teeth from side to side. After I had a complex partial the other night, my jaw kept clenching up to. Hmmm .. interesting. ------------------------------ Peace, Love, Mung Beans

andy- I have the teeth grinding as well. my dentist noticed it whilst i was still a teenager. It is called "bruxism". I am being tested for TLE, so as far as whether or not there is a correlation, I have to wait for a diagnosis. But between you and me? I personally think there is. Here is a link that may give you some more info on this. The article is titled aptly, "Rythmic Teeth Grinding Induced by Temporal Lobe Epilepsy": http://www.neurology.org/cgi/content/abstract/62/12/2306
