Structure to combat memory loss and frustration

Wed, 06/21/2006 - 07:20
Does anyone else here find that a strictly structured routine helps to combat the memory loss associated with seizures? My husband and I have talked about bringing in a very strict routine for me to follow. I get easily flustered and frustrated when I cannot find things or remember things. My husband thinks a strict routine will help me with that. Opinions? Suggestions?

It may help with some things. But I write things down alot. I write what I plan to do that morning. I also put sticky notes around where I need to remember things like making calls. Make sure you have a calendar to write appts. A seizure calendarALso use a diary to write exactly what is going on with seizures, and meds... WHen you go to the doc always have questions written down. It is also good to do things that are out of the ordinary to help the brain with memory, like doing puzzles .... hope that helps. I have encountered this problem, and yes structure is good. Just slowing down and thinking things through is good. Writing down what has to be taken care of, and of course then you need to remember to look at your list or calendar! Sometimes I feel like a child with a short attention span, I think this stems from the fact that I feel frustration coming on so I get into avoidance behaivors, so I do not actually have to see how bad my memory is. I just accept this as part of my life. I do get slightly agitated when my family quizzes me to see if I remember something! Of course I am pushing 49 and have lived with this since age 11. I have worked for the same Attorney for 10 years now, and he is patient with me, and sees how hard I work at trying to be the best I can be. I refuse to let this create limitations for me if at all possible. Think positive and carry that day planner with you! Gwen

Being drilled to remember things frustrates me, too. My husband does 20 questions to get information out of me. It usually works, but it drives me over the edge most of the time. I want the information to be there instantaniously and it's just not. It's like it's hiding in a remote crevice of my brain. Basically, my husband asks me the same thing in a half dozen different ways. By the time we're on the 5th or 6th version of the same question, I just want to scream. But eventually he'll hit on something that will jog something that will pull a portion of something out from it's hiding spot and I'll have the answer I need. By the time we get there, though, I'm usually exhausted from fighting with my brain. :P Do you implement a routine in your day so you do basically the same things at the same times every day and do you find that it helps?
