stop criminalizing epilepsy

Wed, 02/03/2016 - 16:38

looking to start the above campaign : stop criminalizing epilepsy. too many adults with epilepsy find themselves in jail/prison due to a seizure in public being interpreted as resisting arrest.etc. let alone the numerous AEDs that cause fits of rage,Keppra is notorious for doing so. the statistics are outrageous for the number of people in prison with epilepsy, their affliction having put them there. when are these bad drugs going to be taken off the market. i get the impression that they're used as a cattle prod so that adults with epilepsy will end up there. why else are there so few of us out and about when it is not so rare a condition.?

How about stopping the stigma

How about stopping the stigma that comes with epilepsy. Considering the fact that not everybody that has a seizure in public gets arrested. As for medications understand that all medications have side effects. That list includes over the counter meds. Some people can die if they take aspirin. Wanna stop it's use too. Some people can have a side effect of having a seizure with a medication which helps them with a heart ailment. With AED's please look at the percentages of people getting the side effects compared to those that don't. The makers of the medications have that list. I know I have been in drug studies. I got in them because I wanted people today get medications with fewer side effects. The group of neurologists I was with do studies for new medications. Keppra does have posts and they can be found which the people taking it call it Kepprage. Those posts will be from 5-8% of the people taking it that have had the side effect. What about the 92-95% that it has helped? Those people don't come on here and post how good the medication has worked for them. statistics are outrageous for the number of people in prison with epilepsy.. What are those statistics? Understand that you need to look at the whole picture before trying to take on the weight of the world of epileptics. Look at what was being done back in the 1960's Follow that with what some states were doing with people that had epilepsy. To get that information you need to talk to a neurologist that was around back then. In the 1960's some people with epilepsy were being put in homes out of publics view. Out of sight out of mind. In the 1970's there were some states that wouldn't give a person with epilepsy a marriage license. So how far have we come? i get the impression that they're used as a cattle prod so that adults with epilepsy will end up there. Is it the medication you posted this about or the jails or prisons? Who is prodding whom. I have been living and dealing with epilepsy for 50+ years. How long have you been dealing with it. Kennedy was president when I first started having seizures. I know about medications and have taken most of them including their generics. I know percentages of the side effects because I was in drug studies for newer medications. I wanted to be in those studies because I do know what the older drugs did to me when I took them. Back then the medications slowed down the central nervous system. Phenobarbital was used as a sleep pill. Look at some of the actors that took it and died of over doses. why else are there so few of us out and about when it is not so rare a condition.? Compare epilepsy to cancer or heart ailments and see which has the higher number. True there are lot of people with epilepsy. However look at the number of people who have their seizures controlled. Can a person who had a heart attack not have another one? Do I need to stop dealing with my a-fib with intermittent a-flutter? Yes I have both epilepsy and a heart issue. Both can be taken care of with medications. My seizure medications help keep the electrical impulses from going off wrong in my brain. I take a medication to keep the heart rate beating at certain levels. All of my problems come from electrical impulses going off wrong..

A simple way to prevent getting mistakenly of arrested- get a Medic Alert bracelet! If you were prone to heart or other problems you'd get one no doubt. This bracelet would show the authorities what they need to know.
