State Driving Restriction Question

Wed, 11/23/2016 - 15:02
Not all of this information may be directly pertinent, but I want to give the full backstory just in case. I had my first seizure in May of this year. I was put on some medication which ended up having a negative side-effect with my skin, so I switched to a low dose of Keppra, which is what my father takes, also for epilepsy. I consistently took the pills until a month ago, when I made a mistake regarding the prescription dates and failed to take the pills for about 3 or 4 days. I was under the impression I would only have one seizure, but that week, I had another and decided to be much more punctual with my medication. It's become clear to me, my family, and my doctor that the pills are working, and failing to take them brought on the second seizure. However, he told me that I have to take off another six months from driving. I had this seizure five months into my first six month stint, so I'll now be abstaining from driving for just under a year. I understand that extreme caution must be taken, but given that the occurance of the second seizure is well-understood and controlled for, I fail to see why I should have to wait to drive. My doctor only cited state law as his reason for why the restriction is being pushed back. I may have to sacrifice jobs/internships becuase of this, so this ordeal has been frustrating, to say the least. How dangerous would it be to begin driving before these next six months are up?

Your doctor is right.. If

Your doctor is right.. If your state requires 6 month between seizures and the paperwork goes thru systems the doctor has to fill them out in order to have your license reinstated. The law states that. Be happy the time frames have been shortened. When I was young the time frame was 3 years without a seizure. I wanted to make sure so I waited longer. While studying for the test and days before I was to take it I had a seizure. I have gone months without one and then had several the next month. I do know what it is like not being able to drive. I've only been dealing with that for 50 years now. Not driving does not mean you can't do things. It means you have to use common sense and find ways to get to and from work and where ever you want to go.It is also against the law to drive without a license. So think a little you could have an accident and you could land in trouble.
