Sleeping problems

Thu, 10/19/2006 - 19:57
I have had epilepsy for five years. It is controlled, but is triggered by sleep deprivation, and I have horrible insomnia! I get in bed at 11 and don't fall asleep til 4 am. I always get songs stuck in my head. I have heard of other people having this problem - anyone know what to do?

Yes I always get songs stuck in my head. I think everyone does, some with greater frequency (like me) than others. I discovered a trick in my teens that works like a charm for me. Whatever the song it that's running round m' head...once I actually sing it through, not just the refrain but each stanza, it goes away. If I don't know all the words of a song (which happens too) I sing as much as I know. And it goes buh-bye. But you gotta sing it out LOUD!!! not just in your head ;) p.s. you may think I'm foolin' ya, but I kid you not.. it really freakin' works!

Its not a problem that I suffer from as much as I used to, although I slept better when I worked nights than days, guess I often leave my brain switched on when I go to bed, whereas when I worked nights I never went to bed until I was wiped out and slept much better. If I do wake up the night there are 3 pieces of music guaranteed to help me drift off within minutes:- Koyaanisqatsi - Philip Glass In the garden of Pharao/Aguirre - Popul Vuh Silence is the answer - Deuter Or if you live in the UK try putting Radio 4 on in the early hours it always does the trick.

I have had a problem with songs getting stuck in my head for years, and they always seem to be songs that I can't stand. At night I keep a small fan running in my room, for the "white noise" effect. I can usually focus on the sound of the fan and ignore the music.
