Simple partial seizures that generalize????

Mon, 09/25/2006 - 22:56
I have simple partial seizures (deja vu, funny stomach feeling, etc) and take Lamictal. This past week I had a stomach bug and couldn't keep anything down, including several doses of my meds. Last night I had a seizure. I knew it was happening, just like always. However, it usually lasts 30 seconds or so and fades away and I am fine. Last night I remember the deja vu, then the stomach feeling, then NOTHING. I woke up on the tile floor in my office. I had knocked my head a good one in a few places, accidently bit my tongue, and bruised my jaw bone. I have absolutely no recollection of anything past sitting in the chair and feeling the seizure start. This is the only time this has ever happened to me. I freaked, and went to the ER. I was really concerned about head injury since I obviously fell. My CT came back fine, and they drugged me up for the headache. I have an appt with my neuro this week to discuss this. Has anyone ever had this happen? I have NEVER had any other type of seizure other then simple partial. I realize that being sick and puking up some of my meds probably contributed, but I wouldn't think it would cause the seizure to be different/worse. It scared the HECK out of me!

I also get only simple partials and have for 30 years now. They have never generalized. I am also not on any medications by choice. I take Omega 3 and some other vitamins, try to eat healthy and get enough rest, avoid my known triggers and that works for me. Of course not everyone has that luxury so... It's hard to say what caused your SP to generalize, since everyone's E can vary so greatly. It could have easily been the withdrawal from meds, the illness, or some combination of both. Then again it could be something unrelated to that. Hrm. I hope your neuro can help you figure it out and I sure hope you don't have another generalization.

Thank you so much for replying! I have an appt on Thursday, so hopefully I will get some answers. I am really *hoping* that the generalization was a one time thing, and that it doesn't become a common event for me. WAY too scary for me! Stacie :-)

Hi Stacie. I'm sorry to hear about this, and what happened. I hope you are feeling better soon, and that you wrote all this down to discuss with your neuro when you see them. Always a good idea to do so. I do before I get to busy with the task in hand... I read you were working in the office when this happened. Had you been spending more time than usual sat in front of the screen without taking a break was a thought I had. Along with does your office have more than one computer was another. I know when I'm tired, and sat in front of mine, taking a break helps, even if just going making a coffee, or checking the mail. Of course that might not work for everyone, it does for me, and I'm real careful what goes into my body. Speaking of which, seizures can change, and it helps if you know why. Bad research once suggested that partial seizures that generalize are the sort you see in movies or on tv... maybe you would call "grand mal". I don't think they were looking at the big picture, just their own. Thankfully research has moved on since then. These links might help and explain what is going on here. partial seizures are caused by focal cortical irritation, and they manifest with unilateral symptoms that arise from localized brain involvement. Partial seizures may be present with simple motor or sensory phenomena or with more complex psychic symptoms and behavioral signs, often beginning with an aura (eg, visceral sensations, experiences of déjà vu). It is noteworthy that a seizure can start as partial but secondarily generalize within seconds. http://www.postgradmed.com/issues/2005/12_05/trost1.htm Partial seizures can generalize secondarily and result in tonic-clonic activity. Some partial seizures have very rapid generalization, and the partial phase of the seizure may not be readily apparent clinically or even on scalp EEG recordings. However, secondarily generalized partial seizures are not included in the category of generalized seizures, which includes only primary generalized seizures. http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/topic376.htm Hang in there, stay positive and upbeat - that helps.
