Seizures after a night of drinking

Sun, 06/08/2014 - 19:56

Hey everyone,

This is my first post, I just joined. So about 3 months ago I had a seizure after a night of drinking. The past few weeks before it were pretty stressful, I did 40 hours of training for a volunteer program over 3 weeks. And the night before the last day of training I didn't get a lot of sleep and it was an 8hour day. After training we went out to dinner and I was pretty tired so I had a redbull to stay awake. A couple hours later, I went out drinking with everyone and it was fine. The next day I woke up and was really hungover and felt like something was wrong. I went to get food with my roommate and we brought it back to eat. I blacked out and woke up in the hallway of our house(after I had the seizure). Appearantly it was pretty rough, my body took about a week to get back to normal and my tongue was swollen for about a week too. The eeg and cat scan came back negative so the doctor said it was a one off thing for the most part. Everything was fine, I just tried to take it easy, sleep and not drink like crazy. But I did still go out, and a couple of times I did go pretty hard. And about 2 weeks ago, I had another seizure after a night of drinking, although this was not nearly as bad as the first one, just tongue was swollen. I wasn't really disoriented like the last one, when I woke up I was completely aware of what happened (I was by myself this time too).

I was fine and a week later (only time available) I met with a neurologist, he said just stay off of drinking and don't binge. He also recommended not driving for 3 months. I also had an MRI (haven't heard anything yet) last Friday so I'm just waiting on that.

I'm fine if it comes down to not drinking alcohol anymore, I don't want to do die. The doctor said if I drink in moderation that would be fine, but don't binge and I've just heard from a few people to stop with hard alcohol. I understand I should calm down but its just that I'm not even 21 and I want to be able to enjoy myself and go out with friends. I'm not really used to going to parties or meeting people in social situations without drinking or alcohol ( I can but it goes a bit better at parties) and I don't really know what to do and was looking to see if someone else had a similar situation.

PS. Since the first one I continued to party and go hard when I went to drink. And I drank a lot more since the first one happened, more than what I drank when I had the second one in one night. And both were in the morning, day after drinking

I know where you have been

I know where you have been and know it isn't easy to do but I also know that alcohol will lessen the medications you might be taking. Yor EEG came back negative which is fine. I had 15-20 come back normal (negative) before 1 came back with seizure activity. There are many people who had had many EEG's and all of them were normal but they still have seizures. As for teh MRI It is a picture of your brain. The neurologist will look at it closely to see if there is anything wrong or different with it. IS there any difference iin it's growth? Is there scar tissue? Yes there are many things that can affect it's growth of cause damage and that damage can cause epilepsy in some people. One of the main triggers is lack of sleep in many people with epilepsy. Another is stress. Just for your information if all yur tests come back without anything you could still be diagnosed with epilepsy because all it takes is 2 seizures. All a seizure is is an electrical impulse going off wrong in the brain causing a chain reaction. There are many things to see on u-tube that will show what you went thru, Grand Mal or tonic-clonic. Believe me they aren't pretty. My focal seizures did look lke them and yess they were scary. The difference is in a tonic-clonic you lose conciousness so you do not know what happened during the seizure. To you it was a loss of time and you hurt yourself. In my focal seizures that generalized I could see, hear and understood everything happening I just could not stop it. Yes I heard friends saying Ewwww I don't want to be around him anymore. I also heard the person helping me tell someone to get the nurse. I saw the fear in theiir eyes and saw the shoked look. To tell you a little about what happens think of EVERY muscle in your body jerking with ll it's strength then jerking again and again untill the chain reaction is over. You have no idea of the strength your muscles have. Picture a 13 yo boy laying on his back picking up a 215lb marine and tossing him over his body. Pete made the mistake of trying to hold me down rather then move the coffee table. Your doctor said to sto pdriving for 3 months. Fine stop driving. If you are diagnosed your license could be revoked for a period of time until you go a certain period of time without any seizures. States have laws to protect the populace and that is one of them. Doctors and others have regulations which require them to inform states DMV when a person has a seizure. That also includes your neurologist. If  you don't like the law try using some common sense. What would happen if you had a seizure while driving? Could you have hurt yourself or others? In that accident if someone had died what would you have thought. You at least drove and had a license. I went 3+ years and was studying for my license when I had a seizure. I have not had a convulsive seizure since 1970 but I still have seizures and a few seconds is all it takes the have an accident. You need to think about your healty and understand you have control over many things that can effect your health. Like mereloaded said VVVV if you have another one your license will be revoked. If they put you on medications fine the do work to control seizures. Some people get their seizure controlled completely and get their license back. Listen to your doc and try to stop the drinking but do have fun with your friends  I hope this issue is resolved,
