Seizure warnings?

Sat, 07/14/2007 - 09:20
Howdy, I was kinda wondering about this and how many people can feel or know that their seizures are about to start? I personally don't have a clue or remember having one anyway. Many times people will tell me later on that I was complaining about a headache and I went and laid down just before they started. The thing is that its not always like this. Other times I can be in the middle of a word standing there and fall out. I guess part of it is cause I will cluster off an on for days. Also am kinda curious on how long it takes people to get back to the so called "normal"? For me it can take usually a minimum of a week but over a month sometimes before I snap back in. Thanks and hope all are doing well, Brian

Brian-- Your description of "pre-seizure" happenings is pretty much like what I experience. I can count on one per month (fairly mild and usually happening during the night, while sleeping). However, I do notice: (1) my temper is shorter around seizure time, (2) I have trouble getting a thorough night's sleep before a seizure, (3) I get short, bullet-like headaches over on one side of my head, (4) and occasionally I'll be interrupted in my thinking process or while discussing something. Often those symptoms are seizures in themselves, and I've learned to live with them. They used to frighten me, and I would spend far too much time wondering about what was about to happen. Now I'm just careful that I am not in dangerous situations, and that I don't get into the habit of drawing down window shades and staying home. That can only add to insecurity. But know that many of us do identify with you! --George

I used to get the "classic"

I used to get the "classic" epigastric rising, but since my neuro. replaced my Lamictal with Keppra in March (which, incidentally, I HATE) the epi. rising has pretty much gone by the wayside. Now my left hand will suddenly start to tingle then turns ice cold, then the confusion set in. Plus I'll see white flashes of light out of my left eye. That's when I know it's "Uh oh" time, I'm having a seizure. I get many, many simple partials a week but luckily I've so far gone almost 25 days without a complex partial. It usually takes me about 4-6 hours to recover from CPs and that entails a looooong nap once it has passed.

Hi George, My comment is in response to your "short bullet-like headaches over on one side of my head". Are they like intense fleeting pains? I get these really intense lightening-like shooting pains usually one side of my head on and off for a day or so. Is that similar to what you experience? ~Elizabeth
