Seizure types...things that happen

Mon, 03/26/2007 - 17:26
Hi everyone. Thanks for the feedback on my first post. Before the Keppra, my seizures (per husband) involved shaking/twitching, not conscious, and the last one I tried to swallow my tongue. On one "episode" I forgot what I was saying and after all had trouble focusing and speaking. Now I'm on Keppra, and I've had two episodes. Same prickly aura I got before the other ones (out of body, floating above type), but this time I had minor twitching, was AWARE, and couldn't speak! I couldn't get the words out. Is this the meds or is this the epilepsy? From reading on here there are so many different types...but I thought people only had one type. BTW, I did read on here about women getting more frequent seizures close to that time, and I'm due...plus hormones are whacked due to the tumor and the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Thanks in advance. Bless you all.

"Same prickly aura I got before the other ones (out of body, floating above type), but this time I had minor twitching, was AWARE, and couldn't speak! I couldn't get the words out." That was most likely a Simple Partial Seizure (consciousnsss is not lost). They are known as 'auras' if/when they occur immediately before a type of seizure that affects consciousness (eg. a complex partial or generalized) Simple Partial Seizures http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_simplepartial.html Seizures around that 'time of the month' are called Catamenial Seizures: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/provoke_menstrual.html Many people have more than one type of seizure. hope that helps, ~sol

It's probably the seizures. It sounds like the Keppra has helped some, but not all of your symptoms. You need to tell your doctor. You may need more than one medication to control your seizures. And yes, many people do have more than one type of seizure. And yes, as usual, us women are less than lucky when it comes to hormones, and like you, I have PCOS and my hormones are always out of wack. Maybe your endocrinologist needs to be called too. Jen
