Seizure response dog?

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 21:39

i have simple partial seizures (seasonal allergy trigger) well-controlled with topomax I get an aura and when it comes it's really startling. I plan to live on my own. But if I was to have a seizure I wouldn't want to "wake up" from it alone. Should I consider a seizure/anxiety service dog? If yes what breed(s) do you recommend?

Go for it!!  (all opinion, no experience or medical knowledge...) If you only have a few seizures and usually a warning pre seizure, do all you can to be independent as well as safe.  I hope all goes well.

My seizure alert/ response

My seizure alert/ response dog was privately trained!  Long story-short. We got a large breed red boned coon hound from a rescue shelter, mainly because she was pretty. We were replacing our "old boy" who passed away. Turned out this new dog loves me, like an obsession. I was not yet diagnosed with seizure disorder, but had a couple  TC's long long time ago. Turns out I was having nocturnal seizures as well. So I had a TC And my new wife freaked out and I went  to the ER and my epilepsy journey began. We noticed the dog was very upset prior to my seizures after a few more. We found a Trainer whose specialty was diabetic service dogs. She helped us develop my dog further. Now the dog has a regimen of jobs related to my seizures. Example, paws on my chest, help me off the floor, push big red 911 button on the wall, and behave properly In public areas, stores, trains, malls, restaurants, church, airport, these all were training assignments. Now we go everywhere, and I got her licsened as a service dog. She wears the vest proudly and sets a Good example. Training was 6 months as she was previously trained for doggie basics. I am the alpha dog or pack leader. I am the only one to feed her, water her, give treats, pet, walk. No other pets should be in the family. You can too. Oh, it cost a small fortune.
