Seizure meds for my fiance

Thu, 04/09/2015 - 15:13

I am new to the forum, and was wanting to get some help regarding my fiance's medication. He is supposed to take keppra 1000mg everyday but he tells me it makes him drool and very lethargic. He won't take it at all because of the side effects. He has grand mal and petite mal seizures. Would we need to go see his neurologist again? His neurologist does not know he is not taking the meds because of the side effects....

Yes he needs to see his neurologist. Another thinng to do might be videoing the drooling since that could be a seizure too.Side effects do affect people and the neurologist might be able to tell if it is a seizure or side effect. By not knowing how long ago he started taking keppra it is hard to tell. Mainly because side effects go away after 2-4 weeks. After a period of time the neurologist will generally want another visit to see if his seizures are being reduced or controlled. In that visit he will ask how many seizures is your fiance having. Haqve the seizures been reduced and he might be asking the number of different seizures. He needs to know that if he stops taking them then his seizures will get stronger and more frequent. I have been taking keppra for 10+ years and it is the best medication I have ever used. It not only reduced the number of seizures I was having but it also shortened the time in them. Also undderstand that there are many other medications that can be used to control his seizures. I have taken almost all of them. I hope this helps and he gets the assistance he needs Joe

Hi.  I'm glad Joe told you told you about Keppra cause i took that when i dealt with grand-mals years ago.  Now i only deal with complex partials and simple partials and i take the following meds: vimpat, aptiom, and trokendi xr.  I thank the Lord daily cause I have been seizure free now for 10 months and got my driving back after 14 years.  I have to be honest, i am the sleepiest person in the world though.  grace and peace.
