Seizure Dog Help

Sun, 04/10/2016 - 17:41
Hello, I am a freshman in college and I have had epilepsy for the past three years. I have never really managed to get control of my epilepsy. The longest I have gone without seizing is two months. Recently, I have been looking into getting a service dog. I think it would help me be more independent and less stressed. The problem is I am a nursing major. I do not want the dog to go into clinicals or work with me. How would you feel if you had a nurse with her own service dog? The organization then said how I do not want a service dog-which I do in all other aspects of my life. Do you have any advice? What have you done in college with uncontrolled seizures? Thanks, Emily

To start with my seizures

To start with my seizures will never be completely controlled, That is a plain simple fact.I was in college in 69-70, U went and did what the other students did. I didn't have a seizure while there. I had some on the way or after but not there.Less stressed with more independence??? Most of the stress you have you have put on yourself. Independence varies with each person just as control does. I am a senior citizen and have never driven. Does that mean I don't have independence? DOes that mean I don't have friends? Does that mean I can't get to and from places I want to go? You can do whatever you want just like others can.If a nurse walked into a room with a service dog I would take it as it is. She/he needs it for some reason and let it go. Have you ever been in hospitals where they have dogs that go from room to room to see the patients? You might want to look into that necause those dogs do help bring peoples spirits up. For all you know your service dog may do the same thing. Doc brought the people with a dog in for one of his patients in. He was very friendly and did wander around some but the patients liked seeing him.You may get many responses to your post but in the end it is all up to you. Where would you leave the service dog when you are at work. Will you have him go to and from work with you. You see there are other questions you need to think about.I hope this helpsJoe
