Say what? Atonic Drops

Sun, 04/30/2006 - 14:36
I'm having problems with this site this weekend and some of it is probably just me. I wish I could find, again, the clickable definition on this site for Atonic Drops so I could have included it in this thread start. In the definition here by Dr. O. Devinsky he states that people do not loose consciousness when having a Drop. Say WHAT? I am extremely well documented as a dropper and I do loose consciousness. There's not been a time in my memory I haven't. I always have. I brought this up in a new support group I'm attending and one person said she didn't loose consciousness and several of us dropped our jaws in astonishment. ALL of us were droppers and ALL of us loose consciousness. Typically Drops have no warning either, which is to me one of the reasons they're so injuring producing. I've worked very hard trying to detect any warning at all so I could at least start to get to the floor on my own power and I thought I was getting a warning occasionally. Recently I've found out that some of the Drops are Tonic seizures but it all feels the same to me, I'm unconscious once I hit the floor. I'm not surprised that I've developed short tonic sz's as my epilepsy has always morphed a lot so now I know I'm not getting drop warnings, those are tonic seizures which typically you do loose consciousness. But even as recently as a month ago I dropped in front of my neuro who confirmed - that was a drop. Not one time has any neuroulogist I've seen who has seen or heard me describe my drops, nor during any of the VEEGs I've had when I've dropped, lost consciousnes have I been told it's weird I become unconscious. I'm really flummoxed by this defintion I read. I'm very curious. Those of you who drop? Do you loose consciousness? Or do you go totally flacid, fall down and stay conscious? Gretchen

I'm a dead to the world dropper. Never have I been aware. That's why it surprised me to read that usually a person reamins conscious. Here is the link for Atonic Seizures: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_atonic.html -Spiz

Unless I find myself bleeding or bruised, I have to be told that I've had a drop seizure. Apparently, I spring up very quickly. I'm often told that I come up and have to be restrained as I'll be in a rush to get somewhere. Unlike my partial complex seizures, there isn't a significant 'hangover', so recovery is quick. Like many others have said, I'm glad I'm not conscious through it. My meds have controlled this type of seizure better than the pc's and absences.

I was suprised when I read the definition on here for drop seizures as well. When I drop I am completely unconscious. Some people who have witnessed me having them say I look dead because sometimes my eyes remain open and fixed, but not once have I been aware of anything going on during that time. It must be terrifying to drop and be aware of yourself falling and be unable to make your body respond to you. I think I'd rather be unconscious.
