Relaxation trigger?

Sat, 06/17/2006 - 09:01

This sounds so absurd. I've had epilepsy now for about 17 years. It's the fun kind, tonic clonic seizures and not sure specifically what kind of epilepsy. It seems the seizures that I have had in recent years are due to me relaxing or 'coming down'. Some examples: standing one evening talking with my husband (doing some stretching), sitting on the porch enjoying a Friday evening after work, another Friday evening after enjoying *cough* myself, one Saturday cooling off after a bike ride, early one morning at the inlaws beach timeshare.

I usually do a good job taking my meds (Carbatrol AKA tegretol and recently Keppra) and stress doesn't seem to drive seizures. Any other ideas as to what my actual trigger seems to be? I usually do an ok job of what I eat and drinking water. I'm not as concnered about the jerks or occasional deja vu and don't get auras anyway. Just trying to get a grip on the tonic clonics.

Thanks,
benvolio

I think that seizures are more unpredictable than people think. Of course, you should avoid the usual triggers such as stress and fatigue but this doesn't entirely surprise me (having them without obvious stress). Perhaps, too, there is something about "coming down" which involves changes to your neurological state (like sleep--many people have seizures in their sleep when ostensibly they are at their most relaxed state.) Good luck in working it out. Ralph

I suppose I just get frustrated when lots of other people 'know' their triggers or have auras telling them that a seizure is coming. After 17 years of not knowing, I just want something solid about this. Mostly because I fear my drugs aren't working as well as they used too.
