Recently diagnosed...TonicClonic seizures

Sun, 12/21/2014 - 07:24

i have recently been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. I was having partial onset seizures and absence seizures and not realizing that was what they were. Now...I have had 3 tonic/clonic seizures in the past 9 months...the latest one 5 days ago. I am on Keppra...started with 500mg twice daily, now increased to 750mg twice daily after this last episode. I had just gotten my drivers license back after 3 months of no driving (Delaware State law)...only to have it taken away once again after this last episode.......VERY FRUSTRATING! I understand the need for safety...just makes it really difficult and the loss of independence is sometimes overwhelming to say the least. I have yet to figure out what triggers my seizures. Has anyone ever heard of Advil or Aleve contributing to seizure activity? My Neuro says no, but that seems to be a common denominator. I started keeping a seizure log. I don't get your typical auras...I just have a seizure without warning..

Thanks, Mickyliz

Welcome MickylizI rad your post and understand your concern. There are several things that you need to understand. First Your drivers license has been revoked. You haven't lost your independence. Many people have their independence and don't drive. I am one of them. I have never had a license but I do know how to drive and if in the case of an emergency I will.. You can do anything you want and still not drive. I got arround with friends driving. The reason they gave me rides was because I could help them work on their cars. I did everything they did and few people knew I had epilepsy. Some were surprised to find out. I took my GF to rpoms and dances without her driving. It is possiable. Taxis are available. If you get to know the drivers they can do many things that some people would not think of. Like dropping you off at the cinama and picking you up only to take you to the restaurant and driving you home. Oh and I walked my dates to their door. I walked a few miles home but them I likes walking and looking at the stars and planing out the next date. Double dates can be fun too.Auras do happen but not to all people with epilepsy. I have been living and dealing with epilepsy for 50+ years and have had no auras, Which are basically seizures in themselves. In the LEARN section there is information on triggers and many other things. Stress is a big trigger for some. Lack of sleep for others. You may read all kinds of things both in types of seizures and triggers. Read them but also understand that those things happen but not to all people. Kind of like grande mal seizures and epilepsy I have had 1 grand mal seizure and was diagnosed with grand mal epilepsy before they specialized and came back with types of epilepsy. So I can have a tonic clonic seizure. Should I worry or wonder about having one of those seizures? NO since I had one back in the early 1960's.It is true a person can have a seizure and not know it. Absence seizures to many are like blips in time. Focal seizures are like absence seizures. Both look like the person having them are in a day dream. I had been written up for day dreaming in class when in reality those day dreams were seizurs.Your neuro is right. Doctors need to know all the medications you are taking. I say that because some medication can and do counter other medications you are taking. That includes your over teh counter meds. I have ote nail fungus, A medication can be taken to resolve that issue. My PCP will not prescribe it because it will counter a medication I take.As for your seizure log.Look at the My Epilepsy Diary which can be found at the bottom of this page or in the help section. Watch the video which tells you how to use it and many of the things it can do. If you use it you can give your neuro permission to bring it up. If he dose he can look at all the graphs and other things and come up with different medications, dosages and procedures which can help control your seizures. As for Keppra... It is the best seizure medication I have ever used to control my seizures. It has reduced the number of seizures I was having. It also reduced the time in those seizures and the time to get back to normal. You are just above mid range in the ammount you take daily. I take the maximum and we have added vimpat which has helped. I hope this helps and yo uget your seizures under control Joe
