Question and thought

Hi everyone, I am new here.

I haven't really been diagnosed with epilepsy yet but I do feel I may have it. It has taken me this long to realize this may be the cause of everything though. First, I have been getting migraines since I was 5 years old, no one has been able to give me a definite answer as to why I have been getting them.

Another thing is, when I was younger and even now in my adulthood, I would be "staring into space" at least that's why my teachers and my parents have always told me and considered it as staring into space, into my own world as most would say. However, I am now 30 years old, I still get the same migraines but worse and I still stare off, I have been doing it for so long that it takes a while but I can usually snap myself out of my deep stare. Also, during the night when I am sleeping, it's strange and hard to explain but I catch myself like fall or something. I'll be sleeping and next thing I know I'm waking up because I can feel myself lift up and fall back on the bed again, sometimes I wake my hubby up doing it and other times it sleeps through it,  I also found out that it runs highly in my family. I didn't know it until recently but my mom had it (she passed away in 2013), my grandma had it and 2 of my nieces have been diagnosed with it, my sisters both seem to be fine though. However, my question is, what are the odds that I have it? How can I get tested for it?

You need to talk to your PCP

You need to talk to your PCP about your issues. Ask him/her to refer you to a neurologist that specializes i epilepsy. Many of the things you posted could be seizures. The staring off in space is like a person that is day dreaming. When I was in school I was written up for day dreaming in class, Those day dreams were petite mal seizures Today they would be absence seizures. Migrain head aches to come with otherr types of seizures. You can call the 24/7 help line and ask they questions. There is also a section to find doctors in your area in the get help section

The staring of is called

The staring of is called "Absence Seizure", migraines have recently been reclassified as a seizure by themselves. If  Epilepsy can be inherited, IF that is the case it will effect approx. 50% of the offspring. However, people can have multiple family members who have from unrelated causes. Example: My grandfather had it as a result of Type 2 Diabetes and old age, my son has it from a birth defect. A neurologist will give you a test called an EEG to determine if you have it. You may also need a test called a VEEG (Video EEG). Hope this helps.
