post stroke seizures caused by scar tissue

Mon, 01/28/2013 - 15:54
My husband is on 650 mg of Lamictal xr.  He recently had a seizure.  The Doctor wants to add 300mg of Trileptal.  His seizures began post stroke.  The doctors say scar tissue is the cause.  He has been on numerous other drugs, to no avail.  We are at a loss and need help in preventing these seizures. Any suggestions or comments?

Where in the brain is the scar tissue?  I had scar tissue in my right temporal lobe and was able to have it removed surgically.  Surgery stopped my seizures.

The scar tissue is in the left parietal lobe I was told surgery is too risky because I could lose my ability to talk. I am happy to hear that your surgery was successful.

I too have had seizures since my stroke in 2012.  The first one I had was the worst.  I had never had a seizure in my life.  I don't remember going to the hospital.  I spent 1 week in ICU and 1 week in physical therapy.  Since then I have focal seizures about every 4 to 6 months.

I started out on 750mg of Keppra.   After spending 3 days in the hospital after a wreck from having a seizure and blacking out my doctor raised the dosage to 1000mg twice daily.   The seizures still continue and I take my medicine on schedule daily.  Now my doctor has added 100mg Neurontin, 2 pills every 8 hours.  I've had 1 seizure since starting this medicine.  It was very mild, not as intense as some have been.   I've only been taking these new ones along with the Keppra for almost 2 months now.  I haven't had any side effects from the new medicine either.

My doctor at the rehab I stayed in told me these seizures would be the rest of my life.  They are caused from the scar tissue from the stroke, same as your husband.  My doctor has just run my first EEG 2 months ago.  Haven't heard the results yet.  Going in to see him in a week and will find out then what the results are.

I hope you and your husband find the right medicine or right medicine combination that works for him.

My stroke hit the right side of my brain.  I am still numb feeling on my left side.  For me my left hand and arm tingle really bad when a seizure is coming on.  I call that my warning sign to sit down or lay down.  My son is always with me.  He stays with me until its over.   I usually feel off balance for 2 to 3 days afterwards, and I always experience a really bad headache during the 2 or 3 days afterwards.

Again, I hope you and your husband find the right medine or combination of medicines that helps with the seizures.
