portraying epileptics in the movies

Sat, 09/08/2007 - 03:01
ok i had to just get this off my chest... i just watched a movie that had a person have a seizure at a rave. no one knew he had epilepsy. it was kind of funny how it was portrayed because the guy was a dork BUT the way his seizure was handled made me roll my eyes. they were talking about putting something in his mouth so he wouldn't swallow his tongue.... i understand they did that because they care BUT THAT DOES MORE HARM THAN GOOD!!!! I ALMOST BIT MY TEACHERS FINGER OFF WHEN THEY TRIED TO CHECK MY TONGUE WHEN I WAS 12!!! afterwards though when he woke up and they asked why he didn't say he had E it touched my heart cuz he said that he thought they wouldn't hire him because of it. honestly they should get some consultants on set for stuff like that to get things right... it's called continuity. by the way... the movie was called: stark raving mad

Hollywood always gets it wrong. The only thing I figure they do for me is allow me to say to people - ya, I'm epileptic, but not the "hollywood way"...I just go into day dreams & stuff. (absence seizures) Gee, Exorcism of Emily Rose -- what a joke!! I wish I could be as flexible as that chick to end up in some of the screwed up poses they had her in during seizures. And the one line in there "if only she took Gabitrol she would have been cured..."..As if! I'm on 3 meds & still have seizures. Would love to tell off the person that made that movie for making people think that medicine is the answer & if not you're some evil person that they need to practically kill. ~Erin/GG

I had to laugh Jacky!! I almost lost my thumb to the first seizure I experienced with my husband...but only because he told not to let him bite him tongue if he sz'd. Never did that again.... Someday, someone, somewhere will get it across to people that it is physically impossible to swallow the tongue, but it's a darn good bet that they will bite the heck out of it and that being at a rave is probably one of the not-so good events a person w/epilepsy should attend..despite comments to the contrary. Maybe this is your chance to get that out, Jacky, maybe this is where your writing will lead you.
