PNES

Thu, 06/04/2015 - 22:13

There is so little information about PNES. My son has TLE and possibly frontal lobe epilespy. He is an adult.. He has simple partial and complex partial seizures, however, medication is not controlling them. As many of you have probably experienced when seizures are not controlled, the next question becomes:"is this PNES?" His seizures seem to go in cycles...about every 11-14 days. The first day starts with a small simple partial, characterized by a vocalization of "aaah." The second day, he usually has a flurry of about 4-5 of these (vocalizations, frequently accompanied by hand clasping), and on the third day, we know we are entering our "grace" period as he will only have 1-2, of these, and they are milder than the previous day. On day 4, the grace period begins....and the afore mentioned cycle begins again (in about 11-14 days). We have tried 1mg lorazepam during these cycles, and it doesn't knock the episodes out, so our neuro is wondering if these are infact seizures. He does have panic disorder, which is common in people with PNES, however, the fact that these episodes are cyclical is a bit tricky. I would so appreciate anyone relating their experiences! Thanks!

WEll the word that people

Submitted by just_joe on Fri, 2015-06-05 - 18:27
WEll the word that people need to look at is CONTROL. You posted he has these in cycles. You posted his neuro has you giving him lorazepam. Fine loravepam is used to keep people from going into clusters. You however didn't post the medications he takes daily that are for his seizures or the dosage he is taking. You also didn't post when he was diagnosed or how long he has been on medications or the number of medications he has been on. If he hasn't been taking medications daily to help comtrol his seizures then why hasn't he been doing that. Seizure medications are not like aspirin where one size fits all. Seizure medications are designed to treat seizures. A neurologist will generally prescribe a medication that he knows will work an start with a dosage he knows will be close to the theraputic level he wants to deal with first. So how many different medications and dosages has your son used? To many people control is no seizures period. To others a seizure now and then is fine compared to the seizures they had been having. To others like me a seizure every 8-14 days is fine especially when they are seconds in length of time. Like I said sconds compared to minutes wit h the same type of seizur. I could have one while standoing infront of you and discussing something and you would know nothing about the seizure. I know my PCP didn't and after telling him what the delay in my answer was he told me to stay on my current medications since the change is that amazing. Some people can have all their seizures controld and be off medications. Others have their seizures controlled but still have to take medications. Then there are some who grow out of it. Like I posted it is all in how one thinks CONTROL is. If the neurologist used tests like an EEG and came up with the type of epilepsy then the EGG had abnormalities (seizure activity). By knowing where the abnormalities come from they then know where to look. TLE Temporal Lobe Epilepsy shows where in the brain the activity is comming from.  PNES could be seizures that are psychological. There are many different things that can cause a person to have a seizure and epilepsy if one. A person with diabeties can have a seizure. I have a friend that has a sezure now and then but it is side effect to one of the medications he takes and his doctor knows that. SO he doesn't need to see  neurologist about his seizures amd yes they too look like a simple partial seizure lasting 30 seconds to a minute. He kow knows how it feels to be talked loud to in order to capture his attention. Which is what he did to me when he saw me in a seizure. I know control is one thing but I may never be completely seizure free but Doc and I both know it and still work at getting me there or as close as possiable. You see I have only been living and dealing with epilepsy for 50+ years. Now there is another site yo umight want tp look at but first get a second openion. If he has epilepsy which TLE is and it was diagnosed using an EEG fine. After the second openion you might  want to check http://nationalseizuredisordersfoundation.org/
