Please Help - Am I now having a different type of seizure?

Mon, 11/06/2006 - 08:55
I am looking for information from anyone who can possibly help me. I suffered from partial complex seizures since I was a teenager (now age 39) and had brain surgery in late February of this year. At the end of June of this year, was when I first experienced what appears to be a different type of seizure. I do not lose consciousness, but I do get an aura and then experience a very loud noise in both ears. It resembles an extremely loud ringing or the sound of a loud train. I cannot hear anything else when this occurs. It continues for about 1 - 2 minutes, and then stops. When done, I am somewhat disoriented, but without ever losing consciousness. I am scared to death as it appears that this is now a new type of seizure that I'm having. Any advise or assistance would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Hey Josieb , That could be a type of siezure ? Have you talked to your doctor about this . Some people have had some types of siezures come back after surgary . Be careful . Do you have any warning signs before this comes on ? You might want to talk to your doctor . My hope goes out to you .

Thanks, Beckie. I have a call into my neurologist. I have now noticed that I do get the "feeling" (a type of aura) before I experience the spells. Thanks for listening.

Hi josie, :) re: "I have now

Hi josie, :) re: "I have now noticed that I do get the "feeling" (a type of aura) before I experience the spells" I hate to be the bearer of disturbing news, but auras ARE simple partial seizures. (= a 'fact' many doctors don't tell their patients) Aura: A warning before a seizure; a simple partial seizure occuring within seconds before a complex partial or secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizure, or it may occur alone; also a warning before a migraine headache. http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/glossary.html I had simple and complex partials all my life. You mentioned having complex partials before surgery. What you have described above sounds like a simple partial seizure (length of time & the fact that you have no loss of consciousness) preceeded by another (simple partial) ie. the aura. But I'm no physician. The best advice I can give you is to stop going to a neurologist (who specialize in the entire brain as well as the spine) and find an epileptologist. * Epileptologist: A neurologist with specialty training in (and who focuses on) epilepsy. http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/glossary.html (To search out a new phsyician, go to epilepsy.com..top of the page & third from the left.) Last Jan, I had LTL surgery. But, remember, complete success is only in 70% of the surgery cases. However, even if your (or my) surgery doesn't work 1) we tried & 2) now we might still be fully controlled via meds, as the inside of our brains have been altered. Also, it is not uncommon for seizures during the first year while the brain is healing. But, like you, I'd still want to see a physicain about the situation asap. Oh.. and if you are driving, as it's over 6 months since surgery and could be legal in your state, please stop immediately until you get this fixed. I almost died in a car accident (when I had a seizure) so I don't want anyone else to go though the misery. hope that info helps & know I wish you the best of luck, ~sol
