Pleasant smells and stickiness in TLE

Tue, 02/06/2007 - 10:04
I seem to be one of the very few people with TLE who have had olifactory hallucinations who only experienced pleasant smells. Until starting medication these were generally food smells and have included meat loaf and freshly baked muffins. On medication have only had a few breakthough hallucinations. My TLE was diagnosed when I was 55 when I first starting having the olifactory hallucinations. Once on medication I also noticed I was far less "sticky", a symptom my neurologist told me he noticed in my first visit. I always thought it "was just me" going back to my 20's when I found it difficult to end conversations. Has anybody else had these symptoms?

hi halbee- whoa! what you wrote sounds just like me! the pleasant smells! here's what i have smelled- let me know what sounds familiar to you--- how about flowers- can't place what kind? or- perfumy scents ? or- apple cinnamon muffins? or ( don't laugh-) fresh kleenex scents? these smells i have smelled no one else around me smells. they come out of nowhere and are gone almost as quick as they came. i thoght it was just me too! (although about two weeks ago i did get the "unpleasure " of some nasty scents too once or twice.) yuck!

occaisionally i smell baking brownies but really it's rare as far as the stickiness? hullo? ummm. that's me to a T!!! sticky sticky girl over here. i can't even end bad relationships that have gone awry, i always finding myself wanting to "keep in touch" or maintain the relationship, even when it has been abusive etc...and even though i logically "know" better. the stickiness for me is involuntary and illogical!!!

My olifactory hallucinations

My olifactory hallucinations only happen at night, I woke up smelling these pleasant cooking odors. I may have smelled some flowery smells too, but I'm never sure as it could be my wife's perfume, soap or shampoo, or even a scented candle. But I have never had a bad smell. Because of the night seizures my neuro has me on 750 Depakote before bed and 250 in the morning. He confirmed my partial seizures with a sleep deprived EEG. I fell asleep during the test and had some seizures which clearly showed and he said the diagnosis was for certain ten minutes after I had the EEG in his office. Although my very smart primary care doctor suspected it, I was really shocked. The stickiness is really, really intersting. I still slip into it sometimes. It's generally with strangers, like the cashier at the supermarket, rather than friends. I will talk to anybody about anything, but on meds I am much more attentive to whether they are really interested while before I used to blab on and on despite their eyes glazing over with boredom. My understanding of stickiness in TLE is that it doesn't relate to troubles breaking up with someone. That's another problem that I doubt has to do with the primary effects of TLE, but then again, maybe it is related. I just don't think we now enough about what aspects of personality are caused by TLE, though some have suggested there is a TLE personality type. (As a new poster of just two days, I assume everyone here has read Seized by Eva LaPlante). However, I am also someone who likes keeping in touch with old lovers even though I've been happily married for 35 years. Most, however, have no interest in keeping in touch with me even though we've each grown and changed and understand now why the relationships ended. I think this might be part of the personalitty characteristic of stickiness, or some other aspect of TLE some of us have.
