New One For Me.....

I had a seizure early this afternoon that was a new one for me. It was so odd and I was aware all the way through it. I felt weird but alert. It felt like all the joints in my body locked up but I wasn't aware of feeling 'stiff' like I have felt in some seizures. I was aware that I was staring straight ahead but on looking back, I'm not aware of seeing anything while staring either. I had the sensation of tipping over like a board would tip over. This may not have been how it looked, but it is how is felt. I knew I was tipping over but didn't feel and emotion - fear or panic - at all. When I hit the floor, I heard rather than felt my shoulder pop, but I heard it inside my head rather than with my ears. I didn't feel any pain. I'm not sure how long the seizure lasted, I'm not aware of any sense of time but after it passed, the only pain I felt was the sensation that my brain hurt and then I fell asleep, like I do after having a T/C. With a T/C, I usually will sleep 1-2 hours but I slept 4 hours after this one. (And once awake, I was very aware of the pain in my shoulder!) Has anyone ever had one like this and/or know what type it is? I looked up Tonic seizure but it seems like my arms were at my sides and not over my head as the description of a tonic lists. Thank you! -Spiz

I've had similar experiences in the past, but have been able to grab onto something, or SIT very quickly and avoid the fall. I'm so sorry you had this happen ! I hope your shoulder is okay! I'm only going to guess based on Sarah's and my own experiences but do you think it's possible you had a CP that secondized into a generalized sz when you fell? I recently found out that all my drops aren't drops but tonic sz's but I don't put my hands over my head, at least usually I don't. Sarah (my daughter for those who don't know) and I have had a lot of CPs where we feel like we were partially conscious. In her case her memory during her CP tho is inaccurate. In my case I feel like I maybe go partially into the CP. I know what's going on around me to a degree but I'm very removed from it. Emotionless plus I'm "stuck" it feels but I also have this impression I never test that "stuck" theory, I just somehow remember later I knew it somehow - make sense? Sometimes I get tunnel vision with it, hearing distortion, I swear I can't talk although I've been told sometimes I make "sounds". From that I've secondized into a t/c or a tonic sz but not always. It also seems like when I have one of these "stuck" sz's, which I did the other night, but I'm sure it was a t/c, I have a whale of a headache afterwards and sleep profoundly for hours. I also can't get my steam going the next day. Maybe this is entirely different than what you have experienced. I am frankly glad I'm unconscious for some sz's. I posted recently I've awakened 4x in the middle of the night aware I'm having a t/c and I'm "stuck", can't talk and can't move, but aware of it for maybe a few minutes. I read last year another person had that too. I did ask my epileptpologist once if it's possible for me to have a CP that never quite leaves the ground. I don't know if he said precisely yes, but in a convoluted way I think what he said is what that amounted too. He showed me pictures of brain involvement of a total CP and then one where the brain is not fully engaged. My terminology is probably all wrong but I hope you get the idea. I'd rather have a total CP. These half way ones where I'm "stuck" I find afterwards unnerving. Sorry you had to go thru that. I'd ask your doctor his/her opinion too. I did after the one I had a few weeks ago and he started having me take Ativan for awhile at least before I go to bed. Gretchen

Thank you both. It's always comforting to know I haven't been zapped with a whole new type of seizure. Smiles! I've spent the morning in the ER. I'm in love with the ortho on duty. He very gently popped my shoulder/arm back into to place. It hurt like the dickens but I've had ER orthos that are evidently pretending to be in a major wrestling match and out for the WWF big time champions belt fix my shoulder before and then give me tylonol 3 for the pain. This one gave me vicodin. Whatadoc! My neuro (over the phone to the ER doc - can you believe that?), diagnosed the seizure as GSPS/Vestibular and had him up my depakote by one. And what is vestibular? I really don't feel like researching, so if anyone knows, please let me know. I have called my neuro and already know that will be a waiting game on my end to find out what it is from him. The slogan, 'Hurry up and wait', was thought of to describe being a patient of his. Not nice, Spiz. The man is busy diagnosing over the phone.... -Spiz
