New diagnosis - how to help?

Wed, 01/21/2015 - 05:05

Dear all

After roughly ten years of strange déjà vu episodes and unusual feels of euphoria, followed by sweating and nausea, I've recently done a bit of research which has lead me to the conclusion that these are simple partial seizures ("SPS").

My main concern around these is the impact it appears to be having on my memory. For example, my brothers noticed for years how poor my recollection of family holidays / events is, in comparison to theirs. In another example, I am writing this post after having two SPS this morning. Shortly after the second, I was spoken to by a work colleague, and realised that I had no idea what month of the year it was, nor how long I had been employed in my current role. These quite starling episodes of memory loss have begun to make me very concerned.

I visited a neurologist at my local hospital two weeks ago, who suggested I come in for some tests at some stage soon.

The reason for my post is twofold:

1) I was hoping to reach somebody who has been through a similar experience, and whether this person managed to find a solution (and whether the memory issue persisted or passed as the seizures became less frequent); and

2) I also wanted to ask, in everyone's experience, what is the recommended course of action that I should take? As mentioned, I have spoken to a neurologist who suggested that they run some tests. However, I'm understandably keen to stop these seizures as soon as possible. Has anyone found that certain lifestyle factors can help in this respect? E.g. Diet, amount of sleep, stress levels etc.

As a bit of background, my seizures occur roughly every two days, and last around 20 seconds. I always maintain full consciousness during the episode.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask. I'm very grateful for any response you are able to give.

Kind regards

Pete

WelcomeFirst if you haven't

WelcomeFirst if you haven't been diagnosed with epilepsy then start with the testing. If they are seizures and you do get a diagnosis medications can control your seizures. If you had known about these little episodes then why didn't you look into it before now? The longer one goes without testing and having seizures the harder it is to correct.  The longer without medications the more frequent the seizures will become and they will get stronger. In other words instead of simpartial seizures they could become grand mal seizures. As for memory loss it has come back to many but it is also work getting it back.
