NC and driving laws help

Fri, 09/07/2007 - 09:23
I'm trying to find out what the policies are in NC for driving. I have had one seizure and I am on medication. How long does NC usually require you to turn in your license and what are the steps that you must go through. The DMV website was not very helpful. Thanks for your help.

Hey there, sorry about your seizure. Was it a 'grand mal' seizure? I'm not surprised you weren't able to find any info on the DMV site as there are no policies when it comes to seizures or Epi. and driving in this state. I live in NC and was diagnosed with TLE a year and a half ago after having a 'grand mal.' Doctors are not required by law to inform the DMV if they have a patient who has had a seizure or seizure disorder. When I had my 'grand mal,' my neurologist simply told me not to drive for six months...and I honored his instructions. It's really up to you. Now my doc says I shouldn't drive until I go six months without having a complex partial seizure. Well, if I did that I wouldn't be driving until February at this point. But you've got to look at it this way--how would you feel if your seizures aren't well-controlled, you cause an accident and someone is injured or killed? You just need to use your own judgement on this one as in NC, you don't have to turn in your license.

I thought you had to go one year without a seizure in NC. I've been driving since age 20, and I had a tough time getting my license. For a long time, every time my renewal came due, I had to take a driving test along with the vision. The only way I got my license in the first place was to get a dr. to explain to the medical board that my seizures are catamenial, and I had a very vivid aura. I have had my license revoked twice--once after several accidents because of meds and the other time was after a RTL. About six weeks ago I had the only accident I have ever had due to a seizure and crashed into a woman's house. I voluntarily surrendered my license until I am sure things are under control again. I would not be able to bear it if I injured or killed someone. It's a pain not having my license, but I think it's the best way for my family and me. Use your best judgement.
