Naptime Seizures Only???

Mon, 12/29/2014 - 16:23

Hello all and Happy New Year.

These past few months, I've been having approx. a seizure a month. My entire seizure history is as follows:

First seizure when I was 21 and taking a nap (grand mal). I had a fever, I was dehydrated and sick. (I am now 46). My girlfriend found me and called an ambulance. I thought it was a fluke.

2nd seizure, 10-months ago at the age of 45. I woke up from a nap with a severly bit tongue and felt an "aura." No one witnessed me having a seizure, I just assumed that I had a seizure given that I bit my tongue "black" and felt very out of sorts and weak.

3rd seizure, age 46. 4-months ago, I was taking a 10-hour continuing ed class and put my head down at around hour 9 and started to dose off. The next thing I know I'm in an ambulance, weak as a baby and being told I had a seizure. After this, I had the following performed:

  • CT scans = Normal.
  • EEG (just while at hospital) = Normal
  • MRI = Normal

4Th seizure, age 46. 2-months ago, I was taking a nap and woke up feeling like I was in an "auro." There were no other signs.

5Th seizure, age 46. Christmas Eve, I was taking nap and I woke up with my tongue bit, in an aura and my shoulder feeling like it had litterally been pulled out of it's socket.

In every case, the common denominators were as follows:

  • Napping
  • Around 5:00

I've never just "blacked out,"  my seizures always seemed to follow transitioning from conciousness to sleep.

More history:

  • For previous anxiety, I have been taking Paxil for 19 years, although during the first seizure I was not on Paxil. I've continued with Paxil because it is brutal to withdrawl from.
  • My family has no history of epilepsy or seizures.
  • In recent months, have been somewhat sloppy in my Paxil dosing. I.e. I started taking 50MG when I was going through a time of extreme stress and then reduced back to 40MG at a later time. Then, started missing days here and there etc. The missing entire doses has been during the last several months.
  • A year or so ago, around 5:00, I would often get very (VERY) lightheaded while sitting at my desk and I had to fight to remain concious. I added vitamins, magnesium and a mid day snack and this seemed to help. This was prior to having the first of three siezures several months ago.

The only EEG I received was while I was in the hospital several months back. I.e. I never wore the sensors for an entire 24-hours.

Even though the seizure was 6-full days ago, I am still a bit metally out of sorts and my shoulder is still in a great deal of pain if moved wrong. I have a followup with my Doc the end of January but I am at a loss as to what is going on with me. Does anyone have any idea why I would only have seizures recently, and then only around 5:00 when I take a nap?

Thank you all and God Bless!
