My mother had a seizure last night.

I got a phone call today from my mother stating that she thought she had a seizure last night. She said she had woken up from a nap, and had let the dogs outside to go to the bathroom. As she was walking up the stairs to go to bed, she felt really dizzy. When she got into her room, she was leaning against the dresser to keep her balance because she felt like she was about to faint and fell over. For about a minute, she said she was convulsing slightly on the floor. When she finally stopped, she was in a state of confusion, but she said she was concious through the whole thing. This is the first one she's ever had. She's never even fainted before. She refuses to go to the doctor right now because she is getting married in one month, and does not have health coverage right now but will when she is married. I know she obviously should, but she is stubborn. My question is, and I know none of you are doctor's or anything, but I was hoping to get your advice on what may have caused it. Currently, she is pre-menopause and her period is extremely screwy. She had just taken pain medication yesterday before the seizure for it (I only know all this because I asked her, haha). She also quit smoking a month ago, and I assume that this would stress the body out somewhat. I also know she was under a lot of stress this weekend because her fiance had to go in for an emergency root canal and was in a lot of pain all weekend. Not only that, but I'm sure she is stressed out from the wedding in a month. Can these factors trigger seizures at all? I know seizures can be triggered from many things, including serious illnesses, but she has felt fine recently and even does today. This seizure seemed to come out of know where, and I was wondering if the cause of stress and menopause could cause this to happen. I really wish she would see a doctor, and she promises she will if anything like this were to happen again, but I was just hoping to hear other's opinions. Thanks.

take her to any area hospital that gives free care, i know here in houston we have 2. yes, it might have been a seizure but it also could have been a small stroke. it sounds like what happened to my mother in law years ago and it was a small stroke. i don't remember if they just put her on bloob thinners or what, my memorys shot from seizures. i have even talked to my neuro about this since many symptoms are the same betwen stroke and seizure, what do you do, he said go to the hospital if there is any doubt. if you have no hospitl near, go to a health clinic that offers frre medical care. yes hormone changes can bring on seizures but i dont know if it happens that late in life, i know at puberty it can stop childhood or start the on set of them. read some stuff on this site about that if it can start late in life since your an adult, your mom's premenoopausal so i guess shes betwen 45-55. i dont know much about that. this site has lots of info though. stress does cause seizures as well. if she is normally not alone and since yu said she was stuborn, if you cant get her to go just keep a close eye on her and rite down any thing that happens. if she is fine after then just watch her closly. as soon as she has insurnce make sure she sees a doctor. she might be wooryd about preexsting conditins for the insurnce. good luck and let us know how your mom is! banffgirl

Yeah, it's not really the issue of paying for a doctor that makes her not want to go. It's the preexisting condition on her new insurance policy that she doesn't want to deal with. She plans to see a doctor as soon as she is insured again. Thanks for the advice.
