My husband has epilepsy

Thu, 06/28/2007 - 04:57
Hallo from South Afirca! I'm new to this, have never blogged, forumed or even been in a chat room, so please bear with me as I learn! ;-) My husband of two and a half years has been epileptic for 11years and I am just looking for someone to talk to about this. I don't want to burden him with my fears and worries, he has enough to worry about as it is. Are there any other wives out there that can help me? Catz

Hi Ya! I'm on the flip side. I'm the girlfriend that is epileptic. My boyfriend & I have been together 5+ years & consider ourselves married. Only reason we're not really is life....we want that to be a bit more solid before we move on. We both need full time employment & stuff. I'm not sure what you're worried about, but I know it has helped my boyfriend out to come with me to my neurologist appointments. In the beginning my doctor booked those slightly longer giving my boyfriend time to ask the "what do I do if..." questions. Now, he & I are pretty good at handling things. My b/f just calls me his little space cadet & as I snap out of seizures I'll look up at him & mumble 'spacey' and he's like 'ya'. When in public instead of reminding me to take my medicine he'll tell me to take my "T's & K's" or my "night times" (Topomax, Keppra & night times = clobazam at night). So, my first suggestions would be start off by going to his doctors appointments with him. Ask the doctor questions that you need to feel better about things. Then, find a way to make things seem a little bit mellow. Sure, seizures are a serious matter, but they don't have to be overly dramatic always. Go through the first aid motions. It gets easier. Granted, both my boyfriend & I are sarcastic & at times wacky so it's easier for us to handle things with a light sarcastic approach. Main thing to realize is your husband is still the same person they were - nothing's changed except they now take pills. Think of 'em like vitamins to keep brain waves all in check. Good Luck, hope my sarcastic side helps a bit. And on that note, guess I should get ready for a job interview coming up soon! ~ EC p.s. Oh ya, hope your hubby isn't a truck driver - that may be the only impact...ya, I can't get jobs where I need a license, so I'm meeting with Best Buy for Floor Sales...wish me luck ;)

Hi. My husband has epilepsy since he was a child and we've been married for 4 years. Godivagirl's advice are very good! It's very important that firstly you understand about the first aid and not to panic if a seizure occur in public.Go with him to dr.appointments.Show me that you will always be there for him. It is natural that they feel low and loose their self-confidence but it is your job not to let him feel like that. Your support is everything for him. If you want to know about anything in particular then just ask us. Whatever is your worry we are here to help. Anie Smile :)
