My doctor told me I have E.

Mon, 08/07/2006 - 19:55
It started a month and a half ago when I went to urgent care with arm and head jerking and now the nuerologist has confirmed that I have partial epilipsy. He did this with my description of my siezures and my wifes description, and a mri, and eeg, and a cat scan. The eeg showed no epilitcal curve(?) but was abnormal since I have brain damage from an accident 40 years ago. I am now 54 and I really believed that epilipsy was a scaring monster I dodged years ago. The doctor told me I had 25% of getting it. I don't think he also counted in the chance of getting it over time. But now I have it. Talking to the nuerolgist broke down my last little bit of denial, I really was hoping to go in there and have him say I was faking it or something like that, but no he confirmed my fears. I am glad to share on this forum, it is another step of acceptance for me, one more tool to put to use when I need it. I would like to thank all the people who write on these forums, it was of great beneifit for me the last 6 weeks and will continue to be so.

That's very nice of you Kevin to thank people. I was in such shock when I first got epilepsy, my life changed so dramatically and none of it for the positive to be honest I was paniced. After awhile I found an epilepsy forum and it's there I got educated, was with people I could be open with, was supported. The relief to me became a near addiction for awhile. I would never want to go through the first period of time after being diagnosed. There are so many adjustments both functionally and in our thinking. I'm always so glad to see newly diagnosed people here. I had a similar thing that you had. I already had epilepsy, had gotten several skull fractures and brain bleeds from clustering drops, two surgeries, one of which left scarring. Everything eventually became ok but about 2 years later over a period of about 4 weeks I started having a new kind of seizure which eventually became nearly constant. The scar I had gained a blood source and was communicating with my brain causing it so I had another emergency surgery. I was pretty out of it but do remember being wheeled into surgery and feeling such relief not even knowing what they were going to do but at least something was being done and they were able to help that situation quite a bit but not totally without causing brain damage. Glad you're here. Gretchen

Welcome Kevin, That is what we are all here for and we depend on what other people add each day. It is always nice to leave a question or a thought and to come back the next day and see where someone has left a comment to it. You can learn alot off here. There are so many forums for all sorts of situations. I hope you will be able to find what you need at the right times to help you through this time of finding out that you have epilepsy. One thing I try to remember Kevin is this : "I have epilepsy, BUT epilepsy doesn't have me." I make the best out of every day, and you will be able to once the news has kind of sunken in. Hang in there and keep smiling. Cathy
