Memory, Language, and Sleep

Mon, 12/05/2016 - 15:08
Hi all. I'm relatively new here. Want to say thanks to those who maintain the site and to the commenters and posters on here. I am not currently on any meds but I might re-consider that decision. 32 yo, average to athletic shape, smoke occasionally, drink rarely. I have been having interesting memory issues since my partial seizures started in 2008. In that state, several memories from my past get mixed together. I remember people from different chapters of my life as if they were in my life at the same time. People from my time at the Forest Service are mixed with people from high school (15 years apart). People from university are mixed with people from the military. There is no reality to the memories but they FEEL real. What's more, I feel like whatever I'm experiencing when these seizures set in becomes an instant memory. It's like I'm "remembering" what I'm experiencing at that very moment, even if it's something I've never done. Then I pop out of it and the fog clears up. Over the years, I've noticed that my long-term memory of some of these things is changed. And now, I kinda can't tell if it's a seizure memory or a real memory. I also get amnesia during most of these things, to the point of even forgetting who my son and his mother are. The rest of the day is forgotten 95% of the time too. I babble and usually can't speak coherently without extreme concentration. And there too, I've noticed over the years I've had to focus more to pronounce words correctly. I slur my speech way more frequently, which is annoying. Occasionally, I struggle with writing numbers. Strangely, never words. Just numbers. Like copying down some math or physics notes. Once, I couldn't get my writing hand to obey my brain at all for a few seconds. I feel like this is all tied to sleep, like when I get a crappy night of rest it's way more likely this stuff happens. I'm convinced I've had at least one violent seizure in my sleep as I woke up with a seriously injured wrist & shoulder. I'm curious to know what long-term memory, language, and/or sleep patterns other people have noticed over time with their experiences. Did things just keep getting worse? Did any of your medications help? Did the meds make anything (esp. your memory) worse? Thanks again. -Folken
