Medicine makes you lose your emotions? And memory.

Sun, 04/19/2015 - 15:36

Hello there.

Just made an account to ask these two things.

First of all, my emotional life is really low. I laugh some times. I never cry. I have never felt love as I can remember. Etc.

I am under a slight assumption that this has some relevance to either my epilepsy, or more likely my medication.

I am currently at 300mg Lamictal, and 1200mg Zebinix each day.

I have not found this to be mentioned anywhere..

Can a side-effect be loss of emotionality? If so, anyone have any more info on this?

Also, my memory is horrible, and I sometimes feel like im "outside" of a situation. Or even more, some times I feel like whatever is being said to me is just going straight out again, and I am aware of it.

Its hard to describe, but anyone able to relate? I used to have a decent memory (i think), but now it's so rubbish. My walls are filled with post-its to remember school assignments. And the feelings of being "outside" or just not being able to pay attention kinda freaks me out.

I have been without a seizure for 1y6m if that is any relevance.

I do feel that the memory thing is getting worse and worse.

I must say that i know

I must say that i know exactly what you are talking about.  I have been on both sides of the of the table.  I don't think there is a med i have not been on.  I have been very withdrawn/emotionless and on other sides where there can be smallest situations have made me snap or cry.  But just like jwt, said it seems as if many have effected the cognitive direction and topamax was no joke.  It lead me in the right direction for my weight (which i always had a struggle with) but the direction of my thinking and memory went horrible.  For me it a lot of my seizure med have not been helpful but i have had 2 brain surgeries so that might have been part of my major deal blow with memory issues.  It's interesting cause i'm taking aptiom now and feel i'm doing a little bit better memory wise (with two other seizure drugs).  I got my seizures under control and still have some memory issues but driving again.  You are so blessed to have been seizure free for so long.  Hope and pray you work toward getting some emotion issues back. I'm working on that myself.  grace and peace.
