loosing your driving license??? never!

Wed, 08/09/2006 - 23:31
I have epilepsy for almost 10 years. I have visited doctors and hospitals. So it is official. Noone ever told that I could not hold my driving license. I didn't drive for 5 months after my first seizure, but I never lost my license. I didn't know that in other countries do that. So, if you want to drive now, COME TO GREECE !!! :)

From what I've learned on these boards, you won't lose it here (in the US) either if the doctor writes a note. Apparently my doctor didn't even know this because when he diagosed me (simple partial seizures, no unconsciousness) he told me he wasn't going to call it epilepsy so I wouldn't lose my license. Guess I'll have to set him straight my next appointment.

There are different laws for different states. Some states if you have lost your license due to Epilepsy will have you go a year seizure free before giving it back to you, others only have a 6 month waiting time. Here in Maine we can drive after we have been seizure free for only 3 months. I had to take my license test all over again because I didn't want to kill someone by driving and having a seizure so I gave my license up while living in Texas and then I didn't renew it when I moved to Maine. I hadn't driven in 10yrs and then just recently got my license back. As far as the doctors here in Maine anyways they are not required to report to the Department of Motor Vehicles that you had a seizure. They call it something like "the honor system". They figure the person driving will stop driving for the required time. But I don't think that is the case. Many drive knowing they could have a seizure any time. If you want to know the laws about driving just go online and look up DMV and click on your state. It should tell you something.
