Long-term Effect of Seizures

Thu, 11/16/2006 - 16:20
Could someone please list the cumulative effects of poorly controlled OR uncontrolled seizures. I have heard everything from permanent changes to personality, memory loss, evolution from partial to generalization of seizures, to stroke. I would like to know the facts from the fiction. I already know that a stroke can cause seizures BUT...can a seizure disorder cause a stroke? I know there are a few of you out there who really know your facts: Solis, Lisa (angel), wonderwoman just to name a few. Please help me out on this one! ~pamela

hi Not real sure why no has responded and I can not offer to much of an answer to a very big question(s),and it is also the same question I have and what brought to this site the search for this same answer(s). But myself as an example. what I do know. I,m 43 I have had g/m type for 14yrs. basically one a month and always "bad ones". first 2 yrs I did nothing because "i was a drunk" that ruled my life. 12yrs. I got sober and still am and was given dilantin to take 300mg. a day. not a lot of follow up and me not really taking it regularly. I still had seizures but usually on fri, sat.or sun. and was able to go back to work and basically play it off and work hard and act like it did,nt happen. I reduced them to once a mo. or maybe 2 months but this was beating me up pretty bad i,m very hyper and full of energy so I faked it. somewhere after about 3 yrs.I had a seizure at work and went through all the stuff again eeg,s cats ,and was put back on dilantin I took it ,but I now know I was still having partials , and a lot of other weird things happen that I thought were just me because I,m kinda weird anyway lol and like it. so if there is a point here as time went on and I got older my seizures changed I had sleep G?M,s while on dilantin and these started to cause me memory probs. but again I faked it. OK about 3 yrs ago I started having them in the day again because of stress in my life. from once a mo. to every two weeks . these really did a number on my muscles and left me ???weak, unable to use some them and faking it was getting harder. UPDATE>>2yrs ago I was layed off because of plant shutdown from a job I had for 12yrs. AND my wife who I believe is bi-polar had a manic fit (not from layoff) and we split up and almost divorced. shewww. well I started having them every 2wks. my joints hurt real bad from tension caused by them and my lower back goes out from them. UPDATE ..in july I had three in one day 6p.m 7pm and 9pm and went to e.r. twice was on 1,000mgs of dilantin on the last one . after about a mo. of just recovery from the soreness I started to notice I had serious memory probs ,that are getting worse it seems. along with a lot of other issues that I never had before . Ringing in ears 24/7 also loss of balance ,headaches, acute sensory things i.e. to loud, to hot, to cold, to queit, etc..... so thanks for letting me ramble and YES I think this just answered part of your question and mine also. I am being forced to apply for s.s. based on part of this so it is a huge issue with me now . so again thanks Rick

thanks for the reply Rick.

thanks for the reply Rick. your response was helpful. I would ultimately like to know, not just individual cases, but the generalized trend of long term effects etc.... I don't know why no one has responded either; but perhaps no one knows the answer?

Sorry you haven't received the answers you are looking for, but I think you may be right.....no one really knows the answer for sure. I myself have searched all over looking for this info, and can't find any scientific answers. You will find antecdotal information, and information from current studies, but I think that the brain is such a complicated thing, not enough is understood about it to definitively answer this. I have asked my own doctor, and she has told me the same thing. For me, they have found damaged areas of my brain. They still can't tell me if the seizures caused the damage, or the damage caused the seizures. I went untreated from age 19 - 47, and my seizures have become much worse over the last 3 years. Wish we could all get the answer to this excellent question.
