leg jolting back while sleeping....was it a szr?

Sat, 08/19/2006 - 15:03
yesterday, i got up at 6 in the morning, and got my daughter off to school. i usually go back to sleep, but decided to just stay up, cuz i had an appt at 2:30, and was going to have someone pick me up. so, i just decided to stay up, only cuz i thought i'd oversleep. well, by about 1:15 roled around, i absolutely HAD to lye down! i was already a little nervous about how the appt would go, let alone VERY tired. so, i slept some on the couch. now, i don't know if anyone would understand what i'm getting ready to describe, but i'll try my best. as i was sleeping, i felt in my brain the sensation of my leg jolting back really hard. now, i guess i was'nt aware of it completely, physically speaking. it startled me enough to wake up. i was feeling really groggy, and sluggish, yet felt my leg feeling weird. so, i know that it actually happened. why was it then that my mind was aware of it completely, and my body was'nt? was it that i was having a szr while i was sleeping, possibly? or are muscle jerks normal while sleeping? i do recall it being the same kind of jerk that i had before that time i'd actually went into convulsions yrs ago. only that time, it was my head that had jerked. so, was this time, the same thing? if so, why did'nt convulsions follow?

hi 2space, i'm no doctor but as i understand it jerks when very sleepy or while you're falling asleep are not uncommon in people without epilepsy. i do not have epilepsy (my brother does) but i get those jerks (and i know others that do too) and i think they're called myclonic jerks. they do not necessarily mean they are seizures. it seems though that you have had convulsions before and that might indicate something more than just the myclonic jerks. i would monitor them and see if there is a pattern (if they only happen while falling asleep, if they happen every time you fall asleep, if they happen other times, etc.) and if they lead to something more like convulsions. always, if you're worried about it you should speak with a neurologist at least. seizures are very enigmatic in many ways and the answers to your questions are not necessarily simple. you can find out a lot of information on this site and also www.efa.org about seizures and even myclonic jerks.

thank you for the feedback. i will check out those sites. i have'nt experienced a jerk like that in quite sometime. i mean, i experience subtle jerks during the day. but, i'm basically associating that with normalcy. right now, i'm just trying to weigh out what might just be normal verses what might be caused/triggered by my epilepsy, before i go and see an epileptologist, which i will do as soon as i can get some insurance. but, yeah-i will check it out. i appreciate any feedback ican get from anyone on here.
