Ketogenic or Atkins Diet

Thu, 08/27/2015 - 13:09

Hi. I have grandmal (tonic clonic) seizures, and I am currently on Lamotrigine. Lamotrigine usually controls my seizures pretty well, but this summer I attempted to switch from Lamotrigine to Keppra and ended up having several seizures and getting severely injured during one of the seizures. My neurologist has me tapering off of the Keppra and back on to Lamotrigine to hopefully help control my seizures again, but I am wondering if there is anything else I could be doing to help my body naturally reduce seizures.

I have read several things about the Ketogenic or Atkins Diet helping significantly reduce seizure activity. I am considering trying it, but I am wondering if any of you have tried this and if it worked or didnt work for you?

I discussed this with my

I discussed this with my neurologist several times. While both have helped many people they aren't for everybody. The person you need to discuss this with is your neurologist. While I do know medications can stop seizures I also know they can cause them. Just like too much medication is just as bad as too little. Depending of the dosages you were  taking if the keppra was too high then it could have been lowered and might have worked at controlling your seizures better. I say that mainly because it has become the go to medication. I have been using it for many years now. I started on keppra and when the generic  came out I was Doc's testing person since he knew it worked and had patients that would benefit if the generic worked as well as name brand. Well I have used 5 different generic keppras and they all worked the same on me.If the Lamotrigine  controls your seizures well then do go to it again. I used it for awhile. It didn't do any better then the medication I had been on. Oh and I really wait of at least a year before making my judgement on any medication.I ask questionsand want answers. The only way you will get results with your neurologist is by keeping a good relationship with him/her and asking questions. Mine were not difficult " Is there a better medication for my seizures? Is there a medicationthat can be coupledwith this one that will help control my seizures better" Are there other procedures that can help control my seizures? (Your diet question would land there)  Plain simple questions. For every question he asked I had at least 1 for him to answer.I also found the diary on this site and used it. Get it and do watch the video. Give your neurologist permission and he can look at it and check the graphs and other data which would help him with medications dosages and other procedures.I hope this helps and do look at the information in this site about the 2 diets. It is there and it does help people. The keto diet is far stricter thoJoe

I switched from Keppra to

I switched from Keppra to Lamictal (the reverse of your switch) from 2012 to 2014... yes, it took two years. And I did try diet changes. I started the change in Nov 2012 by taking one month to taper up to my Lamictal dose. Then I waited two weeks and started tapering down my Keppra dose. I was fine until I got down to 1/2 dose Keppra, then every time I tried to go below 1/2 dose the seizures started. They were complex partial seizures I'd never experienced before and were tearing my head apart. At one point my neurologist gave me Depakote to stop them, but that made things worse (more seizures, inflamed lymph nodes, headaches). During those two years I tried changing my diet, including elimination of carbohydrates (like Atkins), but that didn't help. Some foods made things worse, but nothing made things better. Finally, in Sept 2013 I bit the bullet and reduced the dose slowly with no help until the Keppra was gone, then I just waited until the seizures stopped. That took about 2-3 months, slowly decreasing. After that it took until Oct 2014 to adjust the Lamictal dose to what worked for me. Those two years were one of the worst experiences of my life. Why are you changing from Lamictal to Keppra? I was so depressed on Keppra I was miserable - a friend on it had the same problem. I've heard many people on Keppra spend time contemplating suicide. I was unhappy and awful to be around, so it hurt friendships. I switched to Lamictal to feel better (so did my friend), and it worked. (Be careful.)
