Mom of 17 yr old boy diagnosed with JME in Nov 2005. Girlygirl: It sounds like you may have experienced myoclonic jerks. Were you tired or drowsy when this happened? Were your legs jerking also? How old are you? Myoclonic jerks are a symptom of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy. The target age for this form is 8-30 years with ages 12-20 the most common. I understand that many people experience these jerks for quite some time before having a tonic clonic or partial seizure and getting a diagnosis. This is not fake or psychological; it is real. The jerks usually happen when you are tired/drowsy, either early morning or late at night. This happened to my son while he was in the shower one morning and he fell 3 times before we got him out and then he had a tonic clonic seizure. He experienced the jerks again late at night before his sleep deprived EEG. They lasted 20-30 minutes. He was put on Depakote ER within 1 week and, thank God, has not had any subsequent episodes. I suggest seeing a neurologist to diagnose or rule out epilepsy. There are safety concerns for you as you could easily fall or, if you are driving, have an accident. Good luck.
