Is it unusual to have 2?

Sat, 01/20/2007 - 10:11
How common is it to have two types of Epilepsy? Like Simple Partial and myoclonic seizures? Because when I read up on the myoclonic's it says they are generalized seizures whereas SP's are focal seizures. They don't seem related. Do SP's generalize into Myoclonic seizures? Can someone please explain?

Hello... I'm a 33 year old woman with generalized epilepsy, and unfortunately, I have not 2, but 4 different kinds of seizures. I have simple and complex partial, absent, and tonic-clonic seizures. I never had auras before the T/C's (of which I was aware), either, until September when I had a complex partial that generalized and turned into a 45 minute T/C. I know my absent sz's come before the T/C's, but I rarely notice those, and my simples are auras for my complex partials. I know a few people with epilepsy here where I live, and they have more than one kind as well. Also, some peoples' auras are really simple partial or absent seizures, so as far as I know it's not too uncommon. Hope this helps, Susan

Hi Susan, My son just got diagnosed with generalized epilepsy. He has tonic colonics, partial complex, and has had one absence that we know of. There have been times before his TCs that he has obviously had an aura, and there are times where he is just playing and it hits him like he was shot. He is on Lamictal and Keppra, and just started on pyridoxine, which seems to be working! He has not had a seizure in a week, and he has not had a cluster in over 13 days! Keep your fingers crossed. I just wanted to let you know that he does have a few different types of seizures. Good luck, and let me know how you are doing. Tresa (mama bear)

Susan, Did you always have the 4 types or did one or two evolve over many years? Like I am trying to figure out if my brain is "getting worse" or whether I am just unlucky. THere is that whole kindling theory thingy where seizures get worse and become more frequent over time...do you think the kindling thing is true? pamela
