Is it possible to talk yourself into a seizure?

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 10:52

I am 52 years old and just this year I have already had 4 seizures (grand mal) and these are the first ones where I have had warning signals, where I've had no warning before.  My seizures would come about every 10 years and I would just black out for 5-10 minutes.  My first seizure was at the age of 5 for about a year and they didn't come back until I was 19 and I had been out drinking the night before and didn't get a whole lot of sleep.  That was the worst one I've ever had, I crashed my uncles car and broke my arm in 4 places.  I was put on Dilantin and didn't have another one until after I had my children at the age of 26; in a public place.  My dose was then raised from 200mg to 500mg (which I have been on ever since).  I had another one in 1992 and another in 2004 until I moved to Denver in 2012.  My first seizure here was last February during my sleep (which was a first) and my doctor switched my medication to 300mg of Lamictal because she thought I would do better on this medication.  I started menopause 3 years ago and just this year I've had 4 seizures (February, May, June, July) and I was wondering if my hormones had anything to do with my seizures.  Or, can I think/talk myself into a seizure.  I worry a lot and I'm sensitive to lights and blink and move my eyes around, before I am having these.  They are not like my usual seizures.  I switched back to the Dilantin last month thinking it was the Lamictal, but now I don't know what to think.  I'm waiting to hear from my neurologist.  I would love any feedback.

You might see that your thinking about women and menopause could be something to look at. I have seen posts about women and their time of month. I also know that changes in the body do make a difference with the dosages. DIlantin is a good medication I used it for about 35 years.I also had to have my dosages changed 4-5 times in about 8-9 months because I was growing like a weed. The change was growing from 85 lbs and 4'8" to 135 lbs and 5'6"/ Dosages are generally set with weight and yes a persons chemical changes do make a difference.  As for thinking and talking yourself out of a seizure into a seizure what you may be doing is putting yourself into stress which can cause seizxures/ I don't want to have another seizure. Stop it seizure I can't take another seizure. So you load yourself with stress of having a seizure. my doctor switched my medication to 300mg of Lamictal because she thought I would do better on this medication.  I hope this helps and you get your seizures under control Joe

I think it is very interesting you should mention this because my neurologist and I have run trials and she has created situations in which she has been able to trigger my seizures... and I have been able to talk myself out of having one. I would tell be body that I have the correct dosage of medication in it and that I am feeling nothing more then anxiety and that feeling... that aura. After a few moments of talking myself out of it I have to focus on something else. I get very nervous, palms get sweaty, almost like a cold sweat- but knowing that medication is in me I think how could I have a seizure?I have gone more then 19 years seizure free... 15 years on Depakote ER. My neurologist just added a low dose topiramate for migraines weather related.
