injuries through nocturnal epilepsy

Tue, 07/04/2006 - 17:01
my mother has nocturnal epilepsy, and recently she has somehow started getting up either before or during a seizure and subsequently injuring herself by falling over, usually in the bathroom. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what we could do to prevent her injurying herself, or as to what may be causing her to suddenly start moving around. Thanks

That's very sweet you have concern for your mother. I had several ideas why she might get up at night moving arouond, then fall down but then I'd be diagnosing your mom, and I can't do that as a lay person and from your post. I too get up and walk around at night in a specific type of seizure. If that seizure secondized or went brain wide? I'd fall down and have a convulsive sz. I broke a toe the other night walking around in a complex partial seizure but I didn't fall down, it didn't secondize. Her doctor needs to know this is happening to her. She may need to oly change what time she's taking her meds at night. There are many options of treatment changes that can be tried but at least her doctor should know, make this decision. Also just to help you understand the vocabulary the word "fits" is no longer used. The correct word is seizure. With some seizures some people use the word convulsions. Good luck. Gretchen

Thanks Gretchen. She has spoken to her doctor but at this stage all he has suggested are sedatives as well as her normal medication which is not really an option as they are addictive and also likely to affect her day to day life - she is still working full-time and will be for a few years yet. I think she will have to go back again and see if he can come up with anything else. Thanks for your help though.
