inherited epilepsy

I just saw my neuro on Monday and he asked me if anyone in my family has seizures and I told him no. He said my seizures sound like they are inherited. I told him unless it was way back or someone has seizures and didn't realize it, as far as I knew I was the one and only. My question is how can you tell if someone's seizures are inherited or not from the symptoms?

Many times the person has generalized seizures. I think they get more under control than others who theirs was caused from being sick, tumor... http://www.epilepsy.com/101/ep101_inherited.html It runs in my family. My moms relative had it. My sister and my neice have epilepsy and so do I. Mine is not under control, I just have cp seizures and my children dont have epilepsy. My sister and neice are under control and have generalized seizures. And much more. take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach1/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/ http://www.sleep-safe.co.uk/id90.htm

I would also like to note that determining if epilepsy is inhereted or not is difficult. It may seen "likely" that it was inhereted based on family history, however, there are many many other potential causes. Generalized seizures can afflict anyone. I myself have generalized seizures but I have no family history of epilepsy. Family history is definitly an excellent way to determine the root cause, but that is not always the case. You can also get more info at http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/inheritance.html Cheers!

I don't have generalized seizures as far as I know. I have simple and complex partial seizures. I have had three eegs which have all been normal. I'm going to have a veeg sometimes soon so maybe that will shed some light on it.
