Increase in the seizures

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 11:16

My husband is 31 and has seizures since he was 11. It started with absence seizure and at the age of 17 he started having convulsions. He has been on carbamazepine 1600 mg per day for 8 years aND had seuzures at an average of twice per year. Last year after marriage the frequency increased. Thrice in 3 months. We went to a different doc. He said that he had primary generalized seizure or a right right frontal focus with hemispheric bisynchrony. He also said that carbamazepine is not right medication for it slowly changed it to kepra. My husband dint have seizures for 5 months. After carbamazepine was completely stopped and he was completely on kepra , he got seizure. He takes 3700 MG ok kepra per day. Now doc has put him on lamotrigine to target to 200mg per day.. during the past 2 months he has had seizure 5 times ! Doc is asking us to wait till the tablet takes effect. but he is having more seizures than wat he had anytime. uncertain of what to do. Please advise

WelcomeHis neurologist is

WelcomeHis neurologist is wanting you to wait because it takes time to  build the therapeutic levels up in his body. Medications to control seizures are not like aspirin where one size fits all and after a certain number of hors the medication is gone. It takes weeks for the body to get used to the medication, Once that happens it takes time again for the body to get used to the medication and the levels to build. Keppra has become the go to medication for seizure control. Your husband is close to the max dosage of keppra and the neurologist is trying to couple it with lamotrigine which is a good medication. I am at the max dosage of keppra. We coupled it with vimpat and I have a simple or focal seizure every 8-14 days. The seizures I have you wouldn't;t know about since they last a few seconds. So please listen to his neurologist. The doctor is trying to get the dosages set which might get your husband seizure free. If that medication doesn't work he might try another medication to couple with keppra. I say all of this because I know what he has been going thru. I went thru being seizure free  for 3 years only to have a seizure. Changes were made which worked well enough to have a seizure every week or so but then I could go months without one. Changes do take time. I have been living and dealing with epilepsy and seizures for 50+ years.I hope this helps and he gets his medications set and seizure freeJoe
